Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD)

The piece contains many dances between the two of them, some of them comic including one where Dean is actually wearing ordinary shoes on the ice as he is learning to adaptsome of them romantic and passionate, and some of them highly dramatic, including dancing separately with the company dancers representing the people from their respective planets. For the most part, Dean wears a costume almost identical in design to his Song of India costume, only this time, rather than being red and orange, this one is red and burgundy, representing his fiery origins.

Torvill wears an Ice Queen costume complete with crown, silver hair, and silver blue dress cut like icicles at the bottom. This medley of Irving Berlin numbers danced in tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers was devised for the brief tour Torvill and Dean did with the Ice Capades in[48] but continued as the final number throughout their long Russian All Stars Tour into For costumes Chris wore full white tie, waistcoat, and tails, while Jayne wore a flowing near full-length blue dress complete with blue feather boa.

Although neatly choreographed with spectacular music and lighting effects, it was arguably not as evocative of Fred and Ginger or as technically accomplished as the amazing "Puttin' On the Ritz" routines that they performed at the Skate Canada Amateur exhibition in One impressive component however was the incorporation of tap steps on ice during the middle of the routine.

During the All Stars Tour and possibly the Ice Capades as well they kept to a similar theme for the final bow, skating on with the company to I Got Rhythm. Little is known about this piece and it has never been released commercially and possibly never recorded.

It was created as one of their pieces for the Ice Capades Tour. In their autobiography, Dean states that he passed on the dance for Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay to perform inand that the dance was about the relationship between a boy and a girl, with the boy breaking in upon the woman's dreams [49].

Both Dean and Torvill seem eager for responses to their new routines in the show and gratified with the verdict that everything is just great, with special accolades going to " Eleanor Rigby ".

It was their newest routine and it's a very interesting version of the song, undertaken with Paul McCartneyhaving little relation to the earlier Beatles recording. Dean and Torvill hated the movie but really liked that version of the song.

Torvill is the fragile title character, clad in muted white with pastel tones across the costume. He is a kind of dream lover to her, dressed in mostly black; he is both exciting and dangerous. She fears him, but she wants him too, and eventually her desire overcomes her fear. That is ultimately her undoing, as he twirls her round and round his body and she can do nothing but be manoeuvred at this will.

It ends with her in a crucifix form across his back as he carries her off into the fog. She was right to fear him after all The performance consists of many highly balletic dances between Torvill and Dean and a few solo performances with the other company members present on the ice.

The piece does evoke traditional Russian ballet and both Torvill and Dean perform extremely well throughout with many beautiful and unique moves. The costumes are simple — Chris in a flamboyant white shirt piece and Jayne all in white, very similar to, if not the same as, as her costume in Shepherd's Song. Originally filmed and performed for the one-off televised production with the Russian All Stars at the Luzhniki rink in Moscow init is not clear whether it became a permanent part of the Russian All Stars Tour, but it seems likely that it was performed in at least the first five months of the Tour.

It is not clear whether another company performance they were working on under Chris's choreography at the time, La Ronde, was ever completed or performed. It would appear that it was probably disbanded and replaced with Akhnaton. Excerpt taken from Torvill and Dean's autobiography: [50]. Tatiana wanted to do a story of Paganini, portraying two sides to his character. Niccolo Paganini was many things: the greatest violin virtuoso of the last century, a composer, the megastar of his day, and romantic adventurer devoured by melancholy.

He had seemed to Tatiana to be a perfect hero for Russian — a soul in conflict with himself. Yuri Ovchinikov would be dancing Paganini's crazy persona, Chris dancing the creative one, with Jayne as the great man's muse. Neither of us took to the number, but restrained ourselves for the sake of a peaceful life.

Performed to South American music, this routine was always very dimly lit for performance, giving the impression of two people on the run, traveling at night and contending with the elements.

Chris wears grey-brown trousers and shirt, with Jayne in a simple one-colour burnt red dress. They performed this throughout the Russian All Stars Tour and at various exhibitions including the Sports Aid Gala and recreated it in for the American Artistry on Ice documentary. One thing that required our attention was Chris's response to some Andean music, which reminded him of the terrible things — particularly the officially sanctioned kidnappings — that had been happening in Chile and Argentina in recent years.

The subject was very much in the air after the Falklands War, and more recently the Costa Gavras movie, Missing.

Chris saw in his mind those who had vanished, the fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, lovers, friends and children, and devised a series of movements linking two people who could be seen as friends or brother and sister, confronting authority, cowering before it, searching for lost loved ones, and ending where they started, in limbo.

Akhnaton is another company performance devised for the Russian All Stars Tour that was never commercially released on film, and no known copies exist. The costumes were of traditional Egyptian royalty design.

The piece received good reviews including repeated praise in the New York Timesand they refer to the piece regularly in their autobiography. Excerpt taken from Torvill and Dean's autobiography: [51]. Chris had been interested for a while in ancient Middle Eastern history, and on a trip to London immersed himself in the Egyptian room of the British Museum.

He liked the feel of the mythology, Isis and Osiris, Pharaoh as god, the idea of dying as rebirth into the real world, the richness of the funerary ornamentation, all that gold lapis lazuli, the stylised poses in the paintings, the hieroglyphics, and in particular the love story of Akhnaton and his queen Nefertiti. This is not exactly top ten material — minimalist style, vastly long phrases of repeated notes, but in mood just what Chris was looking for.

All we needed was to reduce a three-hour epic to 30 minutes. To do that demanded total immersion in the story and imagery. It was an odd thing to do, which involved some long negotiations on our behalf with Philip Glass himself.

The dance opened with a strong image to seize and hold the audience. A huge pyramid of silk, foot square at its base, was being admired by modern tourists.

Suddenly, a line attached to the top whipped the Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD) up and away, revealing the world of ordinary Egyptians in the 14th century BC, all in skirts and sandal-like skates. Widely available on the Russian All Stars video realised inthe group number involved the whole company dressed up as a pack of cards — representing different suits, numbers, and court characters. It is a very lighthearted piece with little substance and was clearly provided as accessible comic relief from the other more demanding group pieces.

Jayne and Chris come on at the end with the spades. Each dancer carries a large representing card, Jayne's is the Queen of Spades and Chris's is the King. Jayne skates mainly with the female skaters in a group with Chris joining them, defending them from the comic advances of the Joker in the pack. Chris wears black trousers, white shirt and waistcoat, with a sparkly red bowtie and jacket with gold lapels.

Jayne has a very short flashy red dress with a spade in the middle. Presumably designed at the beginning of the All Stars Tour, though possibly not until later in the run, this is something of a forgotten masterpiece, even though it has always been available on the Russian All Stars video. Both are dressed in shiny white outfits with blue and mauve embroidery.

The ice is lit a wintry blue and the movements take full advantage of the images of Husky-drawn sleighs, winter pageants, and snow-covered landscapes that the music evokes so successfully. The dance is immensely fast and yet graceful at the same time.

It actually begins in a static lift already posed as the lights go up, and it contains many large lifts from then on. Jayne leaps effortlessly onto Chris's shoulders on a number of occasions and, in one move, even leaps all the way round him, going above his head, with seemingly very little assistance they later incorporated this move into Mack and Mabel for their Face the Music Tour in the mid '90s.

It contains many symmetrical dance steps and large sweeping arm gestures, with a succession of impressive lifts and a series of symmetrical jumps and leaps carried out in perfect unison with each other, giving the impression of animals running through the forest.

Unique to this dance is a series of two symmetrical steps where they literally leap high into the air together but leaning forward with their inside leg bent as they plunge back to the ground, putting their outside leg straight out behind them.

The move actually makes them look like two stags leaping and bounding and thrusting their antlers forward. The piece ends with Jayne throwing herself onto Chris, who bends with Jayne balanced on his knees and allows himself to fall flat on to his back, ending with Jayne suspended in the air Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD) up by Chris, forming a dramatic and very beautiful final tableau as Chris continues to glide across the ice on his back.

Devised initially as one of the new extra pieces for the second leg of the Russian All Stars Tour, this piece went on to be performed for competition to win the World Professional Championships inand they were still performing a section of it by their Ukrainian Tour. The finished piece is actually an ensemble of three quite separate routines, which they later performed in different orders or simply on their own. The first is a tradition lighthearted Irish jig with some very clever footwork.

The second is a more sombre dance done to older tradition Irish Folk music. The third piece is a more modern piece, a very beautiful new age number done to a song sung by an Irish female artist. My brother said AA is better than chirch, which makes sense because its a group of broken leople, humbled by their mutual failure trying to help each other get up and stay up, with the help of and reliance on a higher power. I prayed for years for my children to come to the Lord, 2 of them were so resistant they would become angry if I mentioned it, so I stayed quiet and prayed which is often the key.

How sad is it that my biggest fear for them after such joy of their conversions, is that he chirch will hurt them. They now try to get ME to go to church and I resist. Happy for them but worry constantly they will be damaged by the culture american christianity often is. My dad used to say we are simply beggars showing other beggars where to find food.

That humble sense of equality I dont see in most believers. I found this post after looking up the effects of judging others. I wondered if being hurt from someone judging me or more to the point being critical was just me being over sensitive. But I see that it actually is meant to hurt. Point 3 is very poignant. Words do wound and can leave scars. Yes words can hurt just like it hurt me when I went to church tonight for their last dinner for a while until the new year began.

Or am I? My dad for over 60 yrs, let judgmental comments from his mom, keep him distant from God. My mom prayed over him from the 70s until he passed Dad was ready. It was the last sane decision he made to let Christ back into his Life.

My dad about ate had gone to a revival and came home so excited. He felt embarrassed, humiliated, and and ashamed. Once I saw it in the Spirit, I was forever changed. We no longer seek revenge. Then suddenly the emotions that snare us, fall off like chains unlocked. I love this article because the judgement part is an even deeper aspect for me. Love and integrity. This is exactly what strayed me away from my faith. Judgmental Church. When you dont show up every single sunday, they let you know.

Its more of a social occasion than food for the soul. Also their members are fLling like flies and they try to talk me into coming back. Thank goodness I have found a different church finally! One I fit in. I think this is great! Thank you for the good read. I know I am not alone. Carey, Thank you for your article. It was perfect. My heart breaks at some of the comments above: those who have been hurt by the church and those who disregard them. Many of the hurt comments above were not asking Christians to accept sinfulness, they were asking to be heard and respected.

The only way we can ever disciple anyone properly is to actually listen to where they are coming from. Listening to them is not the same as agreeing with them. It simply shows that we respect them as people enough to hear what they have to say and then gently guide them through the scriptural truth.

We must stop shouting people down and instead usher them to Jesus and let Him, His Holy Spirit and His Word do the convicting of hearts. All arrogance and anger will get is rejection of our Savior.

We will stand accountable for this. This was powerful for me and got me in tears because of its truth and convicted my heart on when I too have judged…. God bless you ministry. This is one of the best articles I have read in a very long time! We are all works in progress.

Thanks again! Just pray and ask GOD to close that door against that church, forgive as well to keep line of communication flowing. Too much there. I have believed all my life. I read my Bible almost every day, and I am seriously tired of judgemental Christians. I have a family member who is one. She seems to have a penchant for picking out my children to bestow her wealth of Christian advice, selfless wisdom, and her great abundance of self-righteousness. That she was led by God to tell my adult children they are sinners and will rue the day that they misstepped.

I love my children, who are my responsibility. They are my gift from God and I do my best. I pray on my knees most nights for them, and pray most days, and pray most afternoons.

I have been a failure in so many ways that I am left humbled and saddened. One child is gay, and one tried suicide. I understand hardship, and doubt. Telling us in so many words that we are failures, that we are undesireable people. That she is the angel God sent to save us. She says this, all while she is not looking in her own backyard, or her own household. All while she has really not communicated or visited for a good long while.

My sister now ruined any chance of my child ever listening to her. What good does that do? How effective has my sister been? Did it change anything? That will work in a way they can choose getting professional help.

What a great post. He is praying the same prayer that they all may have life and have it to the full. May your sister discover a burning passion for Christ and burn with love and care for all those she meets.

Thank you so much. I was never judgmental. But at some point I started a program that says that truth is hard that Grace has made Christians misbehave and sin conciously. But whenever I speak with them with love. They open up to me. Though trying to practise truth made me to bee too concious of not sinning. Recently I went back to how I used to communicate with the Holy Spirit. I want to really understand how I can work with Grace and Truth. Because honestly the Truth seems so hard alone.

But I know same Jesus brought both Grace and Truth. So what should I do. Yes, in an ideal world I would come every Sunday. No one is. Only Christ Jesus. I have not confronted her about how I feel yet. I already battle anxiety and depression. And with that I have these thoughts of simply disappearing instead of facing and dealing with this issue.

The article is so right about wanting to run away from judgment. Remember 1 Corinthians 13, read it what does that speaks to you, for GOD what? So loved the world. Garrison and Kevin, I too am saddened that the church has hurt you this badly.

I pray we will all do better at displaying the love of Christ and being humble enough to remember that everyone of us are broken by sin. I wish there was a way to rewind and undo past damage. I know there have been days I have said and done judgmental things to people and I still regret it. I fear there may be days I do it again, but my goal and my aim is not to do that though. I pray that you will see past the broken people that hurt you to the Christ who is perfect and redeemed you.

People want their Pastor to be Tony Robbins when in reality its just a christian themes motivational seminar, just look at Joel Osteen and other TV superstar pastors. Others are talking about doom and gloom end of the world predictions, Illuminati conspiracy theories and how the founding Church is evil, trying to sell you a book on how to beat the end times.

People are looking for magical supernatural proof of God in Healings, financial growth and luxurious lifestyles instead of being Holy and saintly in their walk of life. Husband and wife preachers run the new churches with their adult kids as successors to the throne. God is great and he gives us the tools in the church for His Will not ours, to be humble not pompous, not afraid but fearless.

What do you think? Can you please explain why my Daughter is alive today and I have 3 grandchildren where the Doctor gave up, and also why I still have my toe that Dr saw wanted to do a partial amputation? Also being on the internet a big sin? The book sold as ravenous book to any person gullible to buy it. Pretty portion of content. Any way I will be subscribing to your augment or even I fulfillment you get right of entry to persistently quickly. Does one offer guest writers to write content to suit your needs? Again, awesome web log! Thank you for your wonderful article outlining judgement vs help and love. My husband and I have moved across several states into a new culture, and that also means a new church. He is comfortable anywhere the Word is preached, whereas, I am a very touchy-feeling-have to feel ok about so many things before I join a church and its people.

Your article helped right my potentially sinking ship and Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD) me a few pointers about loving and helping as a focus. Thank you, again! But to say there is no truth in liberalism is a lie and to say there is nothing but truth in conservatism is also a lie. Both are wrong. To say trurh is only on one side is dangerous and wrong. While what you say about truth in the two camps is correct some of the time. Your closing statement is entirely false.

It amounts to moral abuse. The Nazis were entirely wrong. Slavery is entirely wrong. I think you get my point. We are to go out into the world Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD) evangelize, but meeting together is to prepare us for this work.

As we gain experience as believers we should realize that the Christian life can and should be lived without a dependency on the behavior of others. Any group of believers might contain some who are shallow. In my experience they all do. While working in harmony with others is a biblical admonition, we must rely on His goodness, not the goodness of others. If our support for ministry depends on the character of fellow Christians the devil has already won.

I guarantee disappointment sooner or later. That there are church members who do not reflect Christ well is for some an excuse to retire to a comfortable spot where their opportunities and concomitant responsibility to serve are limited.

Hi, I like this humble, truthful article. We humans all are sinners. We ALL judge others in one way or another. I too find it hard to connect in my church. I have joined the groups and do serve in my church. I have been bullied out of serving in different areas of my church. I have been looked down on, told my hair is dry and my skin is ugly, ignored obviously! Now, it is almost ridiculous. I stuck it out but I am still judged by some of the meanest people in church and they are leaders in my church.

I am almost to the point I want to ask them why? When you are truly a christian and love Jesus, He lives inside you. He changes us from the inside out. Jesus loves people. I know we are to forgive others and love them as God loves us. It does hurt deeply when you are hurt in church, more so because we believe people in church are saints!

Love to you all! Satan is like a hungry beast!! Sometimes I wonder if many of them have mental problems because they seem obsessed with pointing out the so called sin in others but they themselves are often selfish, arrogant, dishonest etc. Honestly they seem almost happy to say that all the unbelievers are going to burn in Hellfire.

Jesus made it clear that love is the most important thing and sadly I see very little of that coming from most Christians. You must live in an entirely different world than me. I have met thousands of Christians. I know dozens of fundamentalists pretty well. You describe a parody of Christians. Or maybe the plank in your eye keeps you from seeing that it does indeed describe those around you or even maybe you yourself.

After all God will judge Christians and non-Christians alike. And I think we agree that God is love. The trash can of history is loaded with false archetypes.

Nearly every persecution or pogrom that ever took place was the result of them. Anytime we begin to relish the animosity we have toward another group or individual we must fall to our knees in prayer, difficult as it may be. Jennifer Roth, I have the same view of fundamentalist Christians as you.

Not all, certainly, but way too many fundamentalists are quick to judge others when they should be focused on what is in their own hearts and on their own journey of growing closer to Jesus. The notion suggested by the author, that the presence of judgment drives out the presence of love, is a very good one in my opinion.

Jesus above all commanded us to LOVE. We are to love God, and love one another. Christians seem to be the most judgemental of each other. They always seem to be hurting each other and rejecting each other.

And unbelievers notice this. Excellent article. Judging others is fraught with peril. Learn from history. Thank you for highlighting this. Calling the command! In that case you would have to leave this world. Do not even eat with such people. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? There you have it; Christians MUST judge those inside the church, but leave judgment of people outside the church to God. Judging by handing the sexually immoral etc over to satan is done without cruelty.

The author is talking about unwarranted judgement toward repentant christians. Which they add up to almost 20k and keeps him and his family in a house too…. Never My Love - Yes - The Goddess Of Mercy (CD) David.

I am sorry you have had bad experiences with pastors. I did want to say however that I am a pastor. I can tell you that neither I nor a majority of the pastors I have known and serve under sacrificed rather than gained from serving the church. I admit, there have been a couple, but in the vast minority.

Granted many of us do make our living as pastors, however that is scriptural. I will tell you that pastoring is every bit a full-time and then some calling. I have tremendous respect for men who do work a regular job and pastor. I have interviewed with a church that would have made that mandatory for me and my family to live, however, they chose someone else whom I know and respect to lead them. They have since been able to pay him a full-time salary, but not because he asked for it.

You are correct that money is the wrong motivator to serve as pastor, but there are also very few churches that can afford to give a tremendous salary to a pastor. Most pay under what the average church member makes, but many pay at least the average income. Without the intent of boasting, I will tell you that when I began speaking to my current church, they were offering less than what I was making as a worship pastor at my previous church that church was larger in size. However, I had not asked the amount of pay when they told me, nor was I concerned about it.

They called me back in a week and told me they decided to pay me more and when they told me I gave God praise because they offered nearly what I was making at my previous church which would cover all of our living expenses. But we just prayed and God provided her with an even better paying job. Little did we know that I would need a surgery for my heart shortly after that would result in thousands of dollars of expenses.

I understand that those people are out there, but they really are the exception and not the rule. We all fail in different ways. That is the whole reason we need grace. I hope your experiences turn out to be better. I do think Carey nails this plainly on the head regarding being judgmental.

I have that problem a lot in my own life and am striving every day to do better because I too want people to know Jesus and instead of knowing Christians to be jerks.

I pray that you encounter better examples as you meet more Christians. I too am a recovering judgmental person. The lowest common denominator of everyone I have a problem with is that they are Christians. Everything from adultery to judgement. I have sought out the Church for answers and found every one of them turning their back on me. Only once we get that truth will we begin to be helpful like Carey mentioned. Will you please consider continuing to look for a church that WILL help.

I pray this helps. The enemy has been very successful in keeping believers from speaking out against behavior that is obviously destructive out of fear of being judgmental. The fact is that sooner or later the results of destructive behavior sin manifest themselves in a ruined life.

Each type of wood produces a slightly different tone.

Snare drum shells can also be made of metal. This gives them a louder and brighter tone. The tension rods are placed through the hoops and tightened or loosened to achieve the sound that you want. One end of the tension rod is threaded; the other end has a square head. As you might guess, the tension rods provide tension on the drum heads.

The lugs are attached to the shell of the drum, and the threaded part of the tension rod is inserted into the lug. Most drums will have eight or 10 lugs. Some older vintage drums may have six lugs. The number of lugs can affect the tuning stability and the sound of the Set The Drums. Bass drums have drum claws. The Set The Drums are metal pieces that fit over the hoops to secure the hoops to the shell. The tension rods are placed through the holes in the claws and then threaded into the lugs and tightened.

The bottom head of the drum is called the resonant head. The resonant head will shape the overtones, or resonance, of the drum. Thinner resonant heads are more sensitive, while thicker resonant heads are darker sounding. The top head is called the batter head. Batter heads may be single or double ply. Single-ply heads are louder and brighter but have less durability than the double-ply heads.

Batter heads can also be coated or uncoated. These little air holes are built into drums and allow air to escape the drum shell when the drums are hit. The vents also improve the stick feel of the drum. As you practice, you may notice the tone of the drums changing.

The more you play, the more your drums will need to be tuned. After extensive use, the drum heads will need to be replaced. There are many types of heads, so what type of head should you use? Each type of head produces a different tone, and some are more durable than others.

Drum heads are generally made of different types of plastic:. The snare drum is hit the most often, so it may Set The Drums replacing more often. Kick drum heads generally last the longest. Be careful to keep track of all the tension rods and claws. Once you remove the hoops and rods, take a cloth and wipe the edge of the drum shell to remove any dust.

Then place the new head on the shell of the drum. You want to center the new head to make sure it sits evenly on the drum so it can be tuned to equal tension across the drum. Place the hoop over the head and then insert the rods into the hole in the hoop and thread them into the lugs. Tighten them until they are just finger tight. Once the head is centered, place the hoop over the head and line it up with the lugs on the side of the shell.

Thread the tension rods and tighten them until finger tight. When tuning your drums, be careful not to overtighten the heads. You want the drums to ring out clearly with an even tone. Using a diagonal pattern, give each rod a half turn, gradually bringing the drum up to pitch. This keeps the tension on the drum head even. The pitch of each area Set The Drums be the same if the tension is even. They have more realistic hi-hats - Acoustic hi-hat cymbals are mounted on in a pair on a stand with a foot pedal enabling the drummer to open and close the hi-hats, which enables drummers to create a wide variety of hi-hat effects, depending on whether the pair of cymbals are fully closed, partially closed, or open.

These newer electronic versions are no longer single cymbal pads as in the s, but dual replicated cymbals, that can be mounted on regular stands like their acoustic versions. Some modules, like the Roland TD, also feature foot close and quick close-open sounds, with pressure on the cymbals also being sensed and replicated when tightening or loosening the foot pressure, even on a closed hi-hat.

So, the audio sounds tighter when firm pressure is applied on an already closed hi-hat pedal. The sensor-embedded pads and plastic cymbals are mounted on a stand or on multiple stands, so that the drummer can put them in the desired position. The electronic drum module is the equivalent to the synth module for electronic drums. It contains the electronic and digital circuitry which produces the synthesized drum sound or the triggered samples.

The drum module has a number of fadersbuttons and knobs on the front or top so that the drummer can make changes. There is usually some type of display, to give the drummer information about the settings and status.

The drum module is typically mounted on a stand, so that the drummer can easily reach it and see its display and other visual indicators. On the rear or top of the drum module is a patch baywith a number of labelled jacks for plugging in the sensors, audio outs, and MIDI in or outs.

Drum modules typically contain "drum kit" presets in their memory. Each drum kit has different sounds, such as jazz drums played with a "brushes" sound, rock drums, Latin drums, African drums, or s-era drum machine synthesized drum sounds like the TR kick drum sound, for example.

Some electronic drum modules, such as Roland's TD, even include non-drum sounds, such as organ, electric bass, orchestra, and so on, which can be triggered using the drum kit sensors. Some presets also include effects appropriate to the drum kit or its associated genre. The drum module may also contain effect unitssuch as audio compressionreverb, and equalization.

The drum module may offer controls to adjust the sensitivity of the different pads and cymbals, change the sound of the tuning of the drums, adjust the "buzz" of the snare, the muffling of the bass drum, and so on. Some drum modules incorporate features of drum machines or sequencerssuch as the capability to play pre-programmed drum beats, so that the live drummer can play along with them.

Some electronic drum manufacturers sell electronic drum-specific combination amplifierswhich contain a power amplifier and one or more speakers in a wooden, wedge-shaped cabinet. The wedge shape is designed so that the speaker is directed at a seated drummer, much like a vocalist's monitor speaker will often be wedge-shaped.

Some electronic drummers use keyboard amplifiers or PA systems both of which are full-range systems. For individual practice, headphones can be connected to the drum module's headphone jack. A bass drum pedal may be needed in some kits. As well, some electronic cymbals can be mounted on regular cymbal stands.

Drummers also use accessories, such as a drum throne, which is a small padded stool. A table-top electronic drum or portable electronic drum is an electronic drum that has all of its pads except foot pedals and the electronic sound module combined in a single table-top unit. It may have a small amplifier and small loudspeakers incorporated so that it can be used at jam sessions without plugging into a PA system.

The sound generation is generally simpler single-layered samples when compared to more Set The Drums, full-size electronic kits.

Cloud Cuckoo Land: A Novel. Anthony Doerr. From the Pulitzer Prize—winning author of All the Light We Cannot Seeperhaps the most bestselling and beloved literary fiction of our time, comes the highly anticipated Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Thirteen-year-old Anna, an orphan, lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople in a house of women who make their living embroidering the robes of priests. Restless, insatiably curious, Anna learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds a book, the story of Aethon, who longs to be turned into a bird so that he can fly to a utopian paradise in the sky.

This she reads to her ailing sister as the walls of the only place she has known are bombarded in the great siege of Constantinople. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, miles from home, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the invading army.

Tucked among the library shelves is a bomb, planted by a troubled, idealistic teenager, Seymour. This is another siege.

And in a not-so-distant future, on the interstellar ship Argos, Konstance is alone in a vault, copying on scraps of sacking the story of Aethon, told to her by her father.

She has never set foot on our planet. Their lives are gloriously intertwined. Reese's monthly picks Read with the club. Weather: A Novel. A lively and ambitious family novel. However, while we find many instances of such utterly explicit sexualisation of female characters, the male narrator also often expresses regret about himself, including his past relationships with, and treatment of women. We see this in Noruwei no mori when boku self-critically recalls how in those days: I was thinking about myself.

I thought about the beautiful woman walking beside me. I thought about me and her together, and then I thought about myself again. Murakami vol. Such reflections and confessions by the male narrator are clearly important for how we understand him and generally come to feel sympathy towards him despite his shortcomings.

Yet, whether the male narrator explicitly sexualises women as consumer products, or whether he confesses his own regret about such treatment, the textual position of the female characters he narrates does not change; they remain objects of his storytelling.

As boku confesses in Nejimakidori kuronikuru when he is about to tell the story of Akasaka Natsumegu, Akasaka Natsumegu spent several months telling me her life story. Her tale was long, without end and full of countless side-tracks. Here, I am therefore producing a kind of simple though having said that, not so short summary of those words, but to be honest, I am not confident as to whether I am conveying the essentials of the story.

Murakami — vol. I, — These works were published over a span of three years —shortly following boku-narrated novels such as Noruwei no mori and Dansu dansu dansubut before Nejimakidori kuronikuru — Because the first-person narrator in this group of work is not male, but female, the setup is no longer that of the male storyteller constructing the female character; here, female characters have been given a voice to construct themselves and their own worlds.

She neither speaks of her complaints nor disturbs anyone, and as she repeatedly points out, her husband and son do not know that she is awake and remain unaware of the changes in her body and mind. She knows she needs to get out, but the men shake the car violently, attempting to flip it over, at which point she drops the key, and with nothing left to do, gives up, and cries.

Following years of hiding from male violence in the mountains with her sister Maruta, she eventually decides to venture out into the world again with the aim of becoming a famous architect at which she succeeds.

He disabled all the alarms, ripped off the locks, beat up my guard, and kicked down my door. He ripped off my clothes and dropped his trousers to his knees. Then, after he forced himself on me, he slit my throat with a knife. It was a very sharp knife. He split open my throat, as if cutting through warm butter. With nothing left to do she is looking out of the window when a green monster crawls up from the ground and enters her house, uninvited. But while those watashi-narrators could at least look out the window, in this story the windows are so full of snow and ice that watashi cannot even see outside, and her entrapment with no means of return is strongly emphasised at the end when she finds herself pregnant in the South Pole, with no flights out.

Liked by everyone, he immediately comprehends the language spoken and interacts freely with the locals. Despite her effort to learn the language of the South Pole, we are informed that she cannot — a rather bizarre point given that in the Free Territory of the South Pole all languages are officially recognised though English and Russian are the most commonly spoken.

Despite her acquired subjectivity to occupy the powerful position of narrator, as with the other three female storytellers, this watashi also becomes silenced on the story level because she cannot communicate with her surroundings. Paradoxically, then, although these four narrators are bestowed with the ability to tell their own stories of individual hardship, the text is their only witness.

In these four stories, by contrast, we are at the point where silence is being broken. In terms of female character construction, what is different about this group of works is that we get direct insight into the inner struggles as women when they begin to break their silence.

Equipped with their own narrating voice, these female narrators have the opportunity to act as subjects in their own worlds and tell their own stories as they themselves experience them in silence — a silence to which we otherwise rarely have access: the silence of women who never find their way out of an unhappy marriage; the silence of raped and murdered women who cannot speak up; the silence of women harming the female self in private; and the silence of women who discover that marriage is not the happy life promised by social discourse.

Female watashi-narrated works are thus important because in these stories female characters are not constructed by the male narrative in the male world, but by the female narrative in her specific female silenced world. Despite that we find only very few examples of this type of works and most are relatively unknown, this group of stories are vital for understanding the position of female characters within the world of Murakami.

Bringing attention to this group of Murakami fiction can therefore encourage us to reread and rethink some of his other works. Voice, focalisation, and participation: Who really tells her story?

When reading a bokustory, for instance, we will often find that in addition to the technique of the overall boku-narrator, several passages of the story are conveyed by a female character, who uses watashi to tell her story to boku, thus reminding us of a female watashistory. Therefore, while the categorisations can help us identify who the overall narrator is and who thereby is responsible for the telling of the full story, this knowledge does not tell us much about what kind of narrator we are dealing with, nor whose voice or vision it is that colours the story, as narrative theorist H.

Porter Abbott points out It is therefore often important to ask whether it is the narrator who tells the entire story; whether narrated events Politically Correct - Crvcial Change* - XXXIII (Vinyl characters are seen with the eyes of the narrator only or through the eyes of other characters; and whether the narrator takes part in the actions in the full story world or stands outside the told story world. Answers to such questions can potentially shift the system of who constructs whom.

Three concepts are helpful in this regard: voice, focalisation, and narrator participation. The voice of the character Reiko also plays a part LP the construction of Naoko since she recalls Naoko to boku in both conversations and letters. It is therefore important to explore whose voices participate in the storytelling, and necessary to ask whether a female character is equipped with a voice of her own. Based on this we must then decide how much power we attribute to the overall narrator.

As a result, boku becomes distant from his told story world; the story is not only about him per se but also about the women he introduces to the narrative. Frequently, we even get the impression that it is he, as much as we, who has to make sense of their strange tales. We see this especially clearly in Noruwei no mori, where boku looks back and remembers his youth, but also in Nejimakidori kuronikuru and many other boku- and male watashi-stories.

Once all the presented story worlds are pieced together in our reading experience, we are in no doubt that it is boku who is the main character and protagonist; it is his life experiences we follow, and the other characters and their stories are encounters along his way.

Unlike works such as Noruwei no mori and Nejimakidori kuronikuru where boku only temporarily vacates positions of voice, focaliser, and protagonist, we can also find works where boku is so removed from all story worlds that he can hardly be said to be the protagonist at all. After watching TV, the friend begins to tell him a story about how her parents divorced over a pair of German lederhosen.

Within her tale, we find another tale, a detailed story about events in Germany as experienced by her mother. The short story thus contains three story worlds as illustrated in Figure 6.

By the end of the story, as we very briefly return to story world I when the positions of voice and focaliser are returned exclusively to boku, it seems that he — as much as we the reader — does not really understand the meaning of what he heard.

During this tale, she retells a story told by her mother. As the story concludes, boku seems unable to understand what he heard and as a result, he and the two women therefore remain story worlds apart.

Not only does boku generally provide more comments throughout the original version, he also begins his narration with a rather long introduction that reveals more about himself and why he tells this story i. The ending also reflects this difference, since the version concludes with boku actually agreeing with the daughter — that the point of the story is the lederhosen Murakami c: Unlike the later version, this suggests that boku understands why the lederhosen are significant; why the mother came to want a divorce after witnessing a pair being made in Germany; and why the daughter understood her.

In this earlier version, it is only us who are left to wonder: Why would a Japanese mother and wife decide to divorce after seeing three German men chatting away in a language she does not comprehend as they produce a pair of lederhosen for her husband? And why would her daughter understand and approve of her decision to divorce only after hearing her story about the lederhosen?

The less he occupies the roles of voice, focaliser, and protagonist, the less he participates in the tale.

While overall narrators are powerful agents who are responsible for conveying the full story, their level of power may depend on whether they, or someone else, occupy the positions of voice and focaliser, and the degree of their involvement in the story they tell. However, there are other questions to be considered, such as whether quotations within a narrative belong to the narrator or to the quoted character Abbott 69— The many letters boku receives from Naoko and Reiko in Noruwei no mori are conveyed to us by him — we have to trust him to deliver these unedited.

Therefore, despite the fact that the explicit level of power is seemingly different in different stories and parts of stories — and this certainly should form part of our analysis of specific female characters — the overall narrator inhabits the most powerful position of all. Just as boku is the link that joins us to the female characters we encounter in boku-stories, so is watashi our link in female watashi-stories. Nevertheless, the person called Sumire is told as seen through my eyes.

Some of the most recurring conditions are: time lapse, forgetfulness, intoxication, sleep or lack thereofdeath, and encounter with the fantastic. Let us look at some examples. As others have pointed out, we see a temporal difference between the time of narration and the narrated events Yeung 1.

More often than not, we are informed of the rather precise amount of time that has passed since the occurrence of the narrated incidents. In Dansu dansu dansu vol. Four years ago. No, four and a half to be exact. The Bakery Attack. Such easy-to-use information allows us to calculate the elapsed time rather precisely.

I, 10, A Wild Sheep Chase []for instance, boku cannot remember the name of the girl he and everyone else used to sleep with: I completely forgot her name. I completely forgot her name. It is therefore relevant to question whether we can trust such a storyteller. Indeed, boku first meets his friend Nezumi when they wake up together in a car crash; how they got into the car, neither of them remembers Murakami Waking up naked with boku in her apartment, she refuses to believe that he did not take advantage of her sexually while she was drunk.

After I said this, an unpleasant feeling hit me [iya na kimochi ni natta]. Murakami 50—51 Her accusations continue until more than halfway through the novel when she finally decides to trust boku for reasons he declines to hear, and to which we therefore also are denied access — However, despite being told that the four-fingered girl eventually trusts her own narrator, we may still be filled with doubt — why then was boku also naked when he woke up before her in her apartment 36?

Is he lying, or was he perhaps also so drunk that he himself cannot remember? As with many of the intoxicated narrators, this doubt seems to linger without ever being affirmed. Intoxicated I-narrators are not a monopoly of male storytellers; one of the female watashi-narrators also reports events that occur while inebriated. Yet, although this information might lower her reliability as a narrator, it is clear that here reality is not concerned with objective scientific truth. Sleepy is a humorous example of this.

Although his girlfriend pleads with him to stay awake for her sake, and he indeed makes much effort to do so by spelling difficult English words, he is constantly on the verge of falling asleep until the very end of the story when the reception ends and he suddenly has the energy to go swimming, suggesting of course that his sleepiness is not physical, but mental, connected somehow to the wedding situation — the ultimate commitment made between two individuals.

However, in addition to being a threat to reliability, sleep in various forms is often a much more serious matter, which potentially influences the construction of characters and the entire story. From the perspective of reliability, the narrative effect of putting a character to sleep is that she, as a witness, is both silenced and blinded; the voice and focalisation of the narrated scene are placed solely with the narrator.

II, These departures from the conscious world are also significant obstacles to reliability that impact the construction of characters and story worlds. I, By narrating the death of these women, the narrator ultimately silences and removes the female characters from the story in a more powerful manner than when they are just put to sleep.

This becomes problematic especially in stories where the narrator is highly involved with the cause of death. However, women are not only silenced to death by the male narrating hand. This immediately becomes a reliability issue, because how can we understand a narrator who narrates her own death? Is her narrative a lie — is her neck not slit after all — or is the narrator not the narrator? While her character is murdered by a big man with a knife, textually she commits suicide by silencing herself as narrator and thereby maintains narrating subjectivity.

But the dilemma travels beyond the short story itself. However, it is the sense that another world exists below the surface of the conscious reality — an underworld reached through sleep, dreams, and spirituality Strecher — that contributes to the unreliability of the narrator. Sometimes fantastic elements are more subtly included in the story world of a specific work.

In other words, acceptance of a new fantastic reality or world is contingent on the prerequisite that we first know how to question the reliability of our existing world. In addition to these spiritual other worlds and subtle fantastic elements, we have for example accepted that in specific Murakami works cats can in fact speak as in Umibe Album) Kafuka [], trans. The premise for a narrative set in a fantastic world is that our knowledge from the real world is not necessarily applicable as a guide when we judge whether the narrator is telling the truth.

But whether or not we decide to trust boku as the narrator of, for example, Noruwei no mori, his narration about Naoko gives us insight into what Naoko said and how she looked as he experienced her, or — and this is Politically Correct - Crvcial Change* - XXXIII (Vinyl as important to acknowledge — how he wanted her to speak and look. This information is still important for our perception of her because the text often gives us nothing else.

While narrator reliability is an important issue for our examination of female characters, my position is that regardless of whether narrators deliberately forget and regardless of whether they were drunk or asleep and so forth, the story is still theirs.

But she was wrong. I had lied only once. Among his works we find two types of male first-person narrators, boku and watashi, and the female first-person narrator, watashi. These three categories are to some degree fluid, since within a first-person narrator type, we can find examples of narrators who are involved with the story they tell to different extents. Potentially, it marks the difference between whether we can understand her to have been allowed to have a voice and vision of her own and thus to participate in her own construction, or whether she has not been equipped with these tools.

However, this matters only within the story world, not on the overall narratological level. No matter how little boku or the male watashi-narrators participate in their narrated story world, ultimately this does not change much for the construction of female characters, since the position of boku and male watashi as overall narrators means that it is the male who constructs the female.

It is from this fact that my initial scepticism towards feminist critiques of Noruwei no mori began: although the three female characters, Naoko, Midori, and Reiko, are central to the story and we seem to learn more about these three women than we do about boku himself, it is not theirs, but his story. Boku is the subject and the women he meets are the objects whom he desires and seeks — but generally fails — to understand. The point is that regardless of whether Naoko is quoted directly or simply described, whether or not boku occupies the position of protagonist, voice, and focaliser, he, as the overall narrator, still remains in control of the full narrative.

Why not just keep quiet about it and imagine whatever you like? What I imagine is probably very important for this world. These include time lapse, forgetfulness, intoxication, sleep and lack thereofdeath, and encounters with the fantastic. Said differently, such criticism is a wish for a completely different story and narrator. However, their narratological privilege is limited by their position as women in each of their respective worlds.

This is what Murakami shows so well in these four works. It is irrelevant for this chapter to enter this disciplinary discussion, and I rely generally on linguist Ishiyama Osamu, who considers Japanese pronouns to come from two major sources, lexical nouns and spatial expressions such as demonstratives xv.

Interested readers should consult works such as FowlerKarataniHijiya—Kirschnereitand Suzuki See Hansen 9—12 for my discussion of how characters become gendered beings. Hanish, however, denounced authorship of the slogan, and the phrase has since been used by feminist LP and activists worldwide, including Japan. The concept has since then been rethought by several literary theorists. We can think of the focaliser as the agent that sees, and the focalised as the object being seen Rimmon—Kenan 73 but including the one who experiences the told in a broader sense; the focaliser may be identical to the narrator and the voice of the narrative, but can also be different.

Garasu no kutsu. Yeung, V. Transnational Literature 3 2 : 1— One of my goals here is to devise an analytical framework that is not only applicable for analysing the gaze structure in this short Murakami novel, but one that may have a wider application to prose fiction that involves gazing in general. Murakami has been generally criticised for his treatment of female characters — in most of his novels, female characters often act as plot device for the male first-person narrator so that the latter can undergo some sort of journey of self-discovery see also Hansen in this volume.

This chapter seeks to remedy this research gap by deconstructing the gaze structure in After Dark, and, by doing so, hopes to attract more fine-grained analyses of gender relations in Murakami. In fact, as I will explain in this chapter, After Dark has a uniquely complex narratological design that may have alienated readers from the Murakami with which they are familiar, but that at the same time merits analytical scrutiny.

In the following, I will first discuss the narrative mode of After Dark, before moving on to a theory of male gaze in literature, and finally coming back to the novel by examining its structure of gaze. However, the question of narrative voice is not as straightforward as it seems. While not every reader sees the novel as only a third-person novel see for instance Hansenthe confusion here from Dalgleish and Murakami on first-person plural and third-person narration thus calls for a careful investigation in narratology.

She is interrupted by Takahashi, who claims they have double-dated with his friend and her elder sister, Eri Asai. Meanwhile, in the other story arc, the camera jumps to Eri who is in a deep sleep in her bedroom, not having woken up visibly for the last two months.

Later, she is transported to an unknown, empty place which is connected solely by her bedroom TV, and there, in the world within the TV screen, she wakes up. The camera then goes back to Mari, who offers help to a Chinese prostitute who has been robbed and abused, and has a long talk with the love hotel staff about her relationship with Eri.

At the end of the night and as the sun begins to rise, Mari again meets Takahashi, who wants to keep in touch with her despite her upcoming study trip to Beijing.

In the last scene, Mari returns home and sleeps beside her elder sister. It must then be noted that After Dark adopts a mixed mode of narration, and understanding the mode of narration in this double plot structure is imperative to solving the narratological confusion mentioned above.

Indeed, diegesis and narration operate interconnectedly. While kakite can mean the writer or the author, I do not believe the interviewer is referring to Murakami here. The literal meaning of kakite — the hand te that writes kaki — suggests a split between the thoughts of the author, and the hand that actually does the writing. On one level, the distinction between these two terms has to do with medium: kakite suggests a written medium e.

On the other hand, the two terms can both be understood as interim categories between the actual author Murakami himself and the text. Since After Dark opens with the cinematic trope of a mid-air camera swooping down on Tokyo, the novel blurs the distinction between the written and the audiovisual.

For this reason, we see no implied author or a Murakami-like figure being conscious about the act of writing; rather, from the very beginning After Dark is a novel presented like a film. For example, M. What is key here is that a narrator always exists, and third-person narration is contingent on the fact that the narrator does not participate in the action of the story.

But what if the narrator does participate in the story? Because of its unique mix of extra- and intradiegesis, After Dark cannot be accurately argued as written in the third person; the precise formulation should be that it oscillates between intradiegetic first-person narration and extradiegetic first-person narration. Moreover, Mulvey maintains that in film conventions the camera must not appear on screen, because if it does, the spectator may realise that they are watching but an illusionary worldso that only the male gaze among the film characters is shown, and the male characters act as surrogates of the spectator gazing at the female ibid.

As proposed by Mick Shortthere also exists a three-layer discourse structure in prose Figure 7. While my theorisation is only halfway and Figure 7. First, the middle layer, the narrator—narratee level, is missing. This is because Mulvey sees no need to acknowledge a narrator in film structure, and indeed, other film analysts such as David Bordwell would perhaps agree that there is no such need see Cobley However, for After Dark there is a need to recognise the narrator level because it is a novel for which a narrator always exists.

In her essay, Mulvey assumes that the camera and the director occupy the same position see Figure 7. In the actual process of filming, the director typically communicates with the actors before the camera rolls. Once the camera is rolling, the director stays silent. The communication between the director and the actors behind the camera is not entirely the same as the interaction between the actors and the camera during filming.

With this, I posit that the camera overlaps partly in its function to a narrator in fiction, because both act as a mouthpiece for the director or author, the mastermind behind the story. While I by no means suggest the camera and the narrator operate in identical ways, the mediatory nature of the narrator being positioned amid the author and the character is analogous to the camera standing in between the director and the actor.

The term "wood species" refers to the type of tree it is: oak, birch, pine, and the like. Some species are rarer or uncommon, and thus are more expensive than others. Species such as red oak and pine are inexpensive. In the Good category are the more pedestrian species you would expect to pay less for if you were purchasing real wood: pine, oak, and maple.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sparring is full contact and injuries are rare as it does not involve striking but rather forcing the opponent to submit using grappling techniques.
