According to music critic Robert Christgauthe album had a far-reaching emotional resonance with audiences: " Rubber Soul smashed a lot of alienation. Without reneging on the group's mass cult appeal, it reached into private lives and made hundreds of thousands of secretly lonely people feel as if someone out there shared their brightest insights and most depressing discoveries.
Instead of cheerleading for love, the album's songs held cryptic messages about thinking for yourself, the hypnotic power of women, something called 'getting high' and bedding down with the opposite sex. Clearly, growing up wasn't going to be easy. While British albums typically avoided including previously released songs,  the lack of a hit single on the North American version of Rubber Soul added to the album's identity there as a self-contained artistic statement.
From earlyrecord companies in the UK ceased their policy of promoting adult-oriented entertainers over rock acts, and embraced budget albums for their lower-selling artists to cater to the increased demand for LPs. Critical response to Rubber Soul was highly favourable. Having opened the review by saying, "The Beatles sound more and more like music", he concluded of the album: "Their blend is excellent, their performance smooth, and their charm, wit and excitement run high.
The writers of Record Mirror ' s initial review found the LP lacking some of the variety of the group's previous releases but also said: "one marvels and wonders at the constant stream of melodic ingenuity stemming from the boys, both as performers and composers.
Keeping up their pace of creativeness is quite fantastic. In another review that Richard Williams later cited as an example of the British pop press not being "quite ready" for the album, Melody Maker found the Beatles' new sound "a little subdued" and said that tracks such as "You Won't See Me" and "Nowhere Man" "almost get monotonous — an un-Beatle-like feature if ever there was one".
In a September review of RevolverKRLA Beat said that the title of Rubber Soul had "become a standard phrase used to describe a creation of exceptional excellence in the field of music", such that several highly regarded releases had since earned the description "a ' Rubber Soul in its field ' ". According to Decker, notwithstanding the band's advances inmusic critics generally view Rubber Soul as the Beatles' " 'transitional' album … from successful pop act to unparalleled masters of the studio".
Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph wrote in "this is where things start to get very interesting Rubber Soul is the result of their first extended period in the studio. The production is open and spacious, adorned but not yet overcrowded with new instruments and ideas.
The songs themselves are like little Pop Art vignettes, where the lyrics are starting to match the quality of the melodies and arrangements. Under the influence of Bob Dylan — and, it might be said, marijuana — the Fab Four laced their tunefulness with new introspection, wordplay and social comment. University professors and newspaper columnists started taking note. Writing in PasteMark Kemp says that the influence of Dylan and the Byrds seems overt at times but the album marks the start of the Beatles' peak in creativity and, in the context ofoffered "an unprecedented synthesis of elements from folk-rock and beyond".
He adds that Rubber Soul is "full of great tunes" from Lennon and McCartney notwithstanding their divergence from a common style, and demonstrates that Harrison "was also developing into a fine songwriter". In an article coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its release, for The GuardianBob Stanley lamented that Rubber Soul was often overlooked in appraisals of the Beatles' recording career, whereas Revolver and The Beatles had each gained in stature to surpass Sgt.
Stanley highlighted Rubber Soul as having been "a good 18 months ahead of its time" and "the first album of the rock era that sounded like an album". He said that the album was "way ahead of what anyone had done before" and, given the short period in which they had to record, he called it the Beatles' "accidental masterpiece".
Conversely, Jon Friedman of Esquire finds the work vastly overrated, with only the Lennon-dominated songs "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", "In My Life" and "Girl" worthy of praise, and he dismisses it as "dull" and "the Beatles' most inconsequential album".
It's a fitting product from a quartet just beginning to explore their inner selves on record. He says that Rubber Soul usually trails the Beatles' next four albums in critics' assessments of their work, yet "it's undoubtedly their pre-acid, pre-antagonism masterpiece: beat music as high art". It was the most out-there music they'd ever made, but also their warmest, friendliest and most emotionally direct.
As soon as it dropped in DecemberRubber Soul cut the story of pop music in half — we're all living in the future this album invented. Now as then, every pop artist wants to make a Rubber Soul of their own. Music historian Bill Martin says that the release of Rubber Soul was a "turning point" for pop music, in that for the first time "the album rather than the song became the basic unit of artistic production.
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys described Rubber Soul as "the first album I listened to where every song was a gas" and planned his band's next project, Pet Soundsas an attempt to surpass it.
He said the album was the first time "you were forced to deal with them as something other than a flash in the pan" and especially admired Harrison's introduction of Indian sounds. In his chapter on Rubber Soul in the Cambridge Companion to Music 's volume on the Beatles, James Decker credits the album with effecting the "transformation" of s pop.
He describes it as an album-length confirmation of the "transformation of pop's range and reach" that the Beatles had first achieved when " Yesterday ", McCartney's introspective and classically orchestrated ballad, topped US singles charts in late Rubber Soul is widely viewed as the first pop album to make an artistic statement through the quality of its songs,  a point that was reinforced by its artsy cover photo.
Paul Williams launched Crawdaddy! The album coincided with rock 'n' roll's development into a variety of new styles, a process in which the Beatles' influence ensured them a pre-eminent role.
We'd all been outflanked She attributed pop's recent embrace of psychedelia and "many of the strange new sounds now in records" to the LP's influence. In Marc Myers' view, the Capitol release "changed the direction of American rock". Citing a quantitative study of tempos in music from the s, Walter Everett identifies Rubber Soul as a work that was "made more to be thought about than danced to", and an album that "began a far-reaching trend" in its slowing-down of the tempos typically used in pop and rock music.
Pepper as the birth of progressive rock Everett and Bill Martin recognise Rubber Soul as the inspiration for many of the bands working in that genre from the early s. Rubber Soul was voted fifth in Paul Gambaccini 's book Critic's Choice: Top Albums based on submissions from a panel of 47 critics and broadcasters including Richard Williams,  Christgau and Marcus. SinceRubber Soul has appeared in critics' best-albums-of-all-time lists compiled by VH1 at number 6 Mojo number 27 and Rolling Stone number 5.
Rubber Soul appeared in Rolling Stone ' s list of the "40 Most Groundbreaking Albums of All Time", where the editors concluded: "You can say this represents 'maturity,' call it 'art' or credit it for moving rock away from singles to album-length statements — but regardless Rubber Soul accelerated popular music's creative arms race, driving competitors like the Stones, the Beach Boys and Dylan to dismantle expectations and create new ones. In his commentary with the entry, Ian Cohen wrote: "Every Beatles album fundamentally shaped how pop music is understood, so Rubber Soul is one of the most important records ever made, by default Even inwhenever a pop singer makes a serious turn, or an anointed serious band says they've learned to embrace pop, Rubber Soul can't help but enter the conversation.
InRubber Soul was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame an award bestowed by the American Recording Academy "to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old". All of which is to say: Rubber Soulthe Beatles' sixth studio album, was the record that launched a thousand ships. Rubber Soul was released on compact disc on 30 April with the fourteen-song track line-up now the international standard.

From toall TV programs were recorded on film in what was then East Pakistan until Bangladesh Television rarely practiced wiping since its Archive was carefully being maintained. From —, Rede Tupi produced new episodes of the telenovela Beto Rockfeller by recording over previous episodes; as a result, few episodes survive. However, part of the library of Rio de Janeiro TV Tupi studios was found in at the headquarters of Radio Tupi, and later donated to the Brazilian National Archive, which signed an agreement with Globo in to restore the tapes.
UntilRede Record had no policy on archiving videotapes; since then, at least videotapes that were previously believed to be lost have been recovered with the help of the Ressoar Institute. The Brazilian public television network Cultura has preserved many old programs and has one of the most complete archives among Brazilian television networks. Despite having suffered a fire inthis fire did not reach the station's archives. After the bankruptcy of Mancheteinmost of the collection was seized at the station's studios, in Rio de Janeirountil it was included in the bankruptcy estate and later auctioned by the Brazilian courts, which caused part of the library to be lost.
Many SBT s and s productions were lost due to wiping and also due to floods that occurred in and in at its studios in the district of Vila Guilherme. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation never practised wiping of programs they produced themselves. This was undoubtedly in large part to its status as a state-owned broadcaster, which allowed it access to government funding to archive its content without having to justify the expense to private shareholders.
As a result, the CBC now maintains a nearly complete archive of all programming produced by them that was recorded. Because of Canadian content requirements, the need for Canadian-produced programming led to more preservation of the shows they produced, and even very poorly received programs such as the infamous The Trouble with Tracy were saved and rerun for several years after their cancellation.
Message To Australia - The Beatles - The Complete Roger Scott Tapes (CD), Canadian rebroadcasts have been a source of some broadcasts that are otherwise lost in the United States and the United Kingdom. Due to its multiple studio facilities, namely its Chapultepec and San Angel studiosTelevisa preserved most of its scripted series for broadcast years after the preserved programs had ended their original runs.
Some Televisa programs, however, were lost not due to wiping, but due to the Mexico City earthquake that destroyed part of the network's archive. In the early days of PTVa few test transmissions were broadcast, but the majority of programming was live.
Since at the time PTV did not have the tools needed to create backups, the programming was considered lost as soon as it aired. Both were stored in spools. Final archive cuts of aired shows were stored in a near-freezing room, which was the standard storage requirement.
However, sometime in the early s, the air conditioning for archives was turned down too much, causing the spools to succumb to the heat and fuse together. When the industry finally realised in early s that transfer to digital video was imminent, the equipment needed to play back the old spools was no longer in working condition and replacement parts were almost nonexistent. The spools were stored at the Shalimar recording company, and PTV has been able to play segments for retrospective programs.
Additionally, viewer home recordings also exist and are the only source of video for some shows. The Center for Media Psychology Research Pakistan website gives a different story, stating that after the switch to colour broadcast, the recording medium in the s was the one inch spool format which recorded sound and electronic moving pictures as a combined stream on a magnetic recording medium.
However, due to the one inch magnetic spool containing all old archives was eventually lost. The BBCthe United Kingdom's first public service broadcasterhad no policy on archiving until Rationales behind this policy include:. The BBC's television service dates back to and was originally a nearly live-only medium. The hours of transmission were very limited and the bulk of the programming was transmitted either live from the studio, or from outside broadcast OB units; film was a minor contributor to the output.
When the first television broadcasts were made, there were two competing systems in use. The EMI electronic system using lines competed with the Baird line mechanical television system. Baird adopted an intermediate film technique where the live material was filmed using a standard film camera mounted on a large cabinet which contained a rapid processing unit and an early flying spot scanner to produce the video output for transmission.
The pioneer broadcasts were not, however, preserved on this intermediate film as the nitrate celluloid stock was scanned while still wet from the fixer bath and never washed to remove the fixer chemicals. Consequently, the film decomposed very soon after transmission; nothing is known to have survived. No studio or OB programmes from to or to have survived because there was no means of preserving them.
Historical 'firsts' from this era, the world's earliest television crime drama Telecrime —39 and or Pinwright's Progress —47, the world's first regular situation comedyonly remain visually as a handful of still photographs.
The earliest recording method for television was telerecordingwhich involved recording the image from a special television monitor onto film with a modified film camera. Early examples made by this method include the first two episodes of The Quatermass Experimenttransmitted live while simultaneously telerecorded. The visual quality of the second episode's recording was considered so poor—a fly entered the gap between the camera and monitor at one point—that the remainder of the series was not recorded.
Although 2-inch Quadruplex videotape recording technology was utilised in the UK fromthis system was expensive and complex; recorded programmes were often erased after broadcast. The vast majority of live programmes were never recorded at all. Videotape was not initially thought to be a permanent archivable medium — its high cost and the potential reuse of the tapes led to the transfer of programme material to film via telerecording whenever sales of overseas screening rights were possible or preservation deemed worthwhile.
The recycling of videotapes, coupled with savings made on the storage of the bulky 2" tapes,  enabled the BBC to keep costs down. Drama and entertainment output was studio-based and followed the tradition of live theatre and radio drama ; if a radio drama needed to be broadcast at a later date, it was not uncommon to simply reassemble performers and recreate the show. The Sunday Night Play a major event in the s was performed live in the studio. On Thursday, because telerecording was of insufficient broadcast quality, another live performance followed, the artists returning to perform the play again.
Today, most programmes are pre-recorded and it is relatively inexpensive to preserve programming for posterity; even so, the BBC Charter makes no mention of any obligation to retain all of them. All television programmes have copyright and other rights issues associated with them. For some genres of programmes—such as drama and entertainment—the actors, writers, and musicians involved in a production all have underlying rights.
In the past, these rights were defended rigorously—permission could even be denied by a contributor for the repeat or re-use of a programme. Talent unions were highly suspicious of the threat to new work if programmes were repeated; indeed, before Equity insisted that any telerecording made of a repeat performance could only "be viewed privately" on BBC premises and not transmitted.
The introduction of colour television in the United Kingdom from meant that broadcasters felt there was even less value in retaining monochrome recordings. Such tapes could not be re-used for colour production, so they were disposed of to create space for the new colour tapes in the archives, which were quickly filling up.
Negative attitudes to a programme's value also persisted. For these reasons, many programmes survive only as monochrome film recordings, if at all. Some colour productions were telerecorded onto monochrome film for export to countries which did not yet have colour television. In some cases, early colour programmes only survive in this form. High-profile examples of programme losses include many early episodes of Doctor Who 97The Wednesday Playmost of the seminal comedy series Not Only But Alsoall of the s televised Francis Durbridge serials further, the first two serials were never recordedthe vast majority of the BBC's Apollo 11 Moon landing studio coverageall but one of the 39 episodes of The First Lady and all episodes of the soap opera United!
The Beatles ' only live appearance on Top Of The Pops inperforming the single " Paperback Writer " is believed to have been wiped in a clear-out in the s.
An off-air recording of 11 seconds of footage made on an 8mm film camera was discovered in April The first acting appearance of musician Bob Dylanin a play entitled The Madhouse on Castle Streetwas erased in There is lost material in all genres — as late as the early s, a large number of videotaped children's programmes from the s and s were irretrievably wiped by the BBC archives on the assumption that they were of "low priority", without consulting the BBC children's department itself.
Virtually the entire runs of the corporation's pres soap operas have been lost. There are no episodes of either United! Three episodes of Dad's Army are missing, all from the second series. Also vulnerable to the corporation's wiping policy were programmes that only lasted for one series. Early episodes of the pop music-chart show Top of the Pops were wiped or never recorded while they were being transmitted live, including the only in-studio appearance by The Beatles.
The last lost edition dates from 8 September There are only four complete TOTP episodes surviving from the s, while many otherwise-missing episodes survive only as fragments. Only two episodes still exist of The Sandie Shaw Supplement a music-variety show hosted by the eponymous singerrecorded in Since the establishment of an archival policy for television inBBC archivists and others over the years have used various contacts in the UK and abroad to try to track down missing programmes.
For example, all BBC Worldwide customers—broadcasters around the world—who had bought programmes from the corporation were contacted to see if they still had copies which could be returned; Doctor Who is a prime example of how this method recovered episodes that the corporation did not hold itself.
At the turn of the 21st century, the BBC Message To Australia - The Beatles - The Complete Roger Scott Tapes (CD) its Archive Treasure Hunta public appeal to recover lost productions, which has had some successes. The BBC also has close contacts with the National Film and Television Archivewhich is part of the British Film Institute and its "Missing Believed Wiped" event which was first held in and is part of a campaign to locate lost items from British television's past.
There is also a network of collectors who, if they find any programmes missing from the BBC archives, will contact the corporation with information—or sometimes even the actual footage. For many years the pilot episode of Are You Being Served?
Ina colour version was reconstructed when it was realised that the black and white film reel had actually recorded sufficient colour information as a dot crawl pattern to allow colour recovery. The BBC was not alone in this practice — the commercial companies that formed its main rival ITV also wiped videotapes and destroyed telerecordingsleaving gaps in their archive holdings.
The state of the archives varies greatly between the different companies; Granada Television holds a large number of its older black-and-white programmes, the company having an unofficial policy of retaining as much of its broadcast material albeit by telerecording as possible despite financial hardship in its early years.
This includes the entirety of the soap opera Coronation Street which is now held at the Yorkshire Television archive, which itself possesses largely intact archives, although some early colour shows from the late s and the early s such as the entire output of the drama Castle Haventhe first two series of Sez Les and the children's variety show Junior Showtime are missing and believed wiped. The archive of networked programmes made by Southern Televisionfor example, is now owned by the otherwise-unconnected Australian media company Southern Star Group but Southern's regional output is in the hands of Message To Australia - The Beatles - The Complete Roger Scott Tapes (CD) plc.

With the record, the band executed a wider range of musical styles  and broke with their recent tradition of incorporating several musical styles in one song by keeping each piece of music consistently faithful to a select genre. Pepper had.
The project's impetus came from an idea Martin attributes to McCartney, who suggested they "record an album of new material and rehearse it, then perform it before a live audience for the very first time — on record and on film".
It was a time when relations between the Beatles were at their lowest ebb. Upon returning, he threatened to leave the band unless they "abandon[ed] all talk of live performance" and instead focused on finishing a new album, initially titled Get Backusing songs recorded for the TV special. His bandmates agreed, and it was decided to salvage the footage shot for the TV production for use in a feature film.
To alleviate tensions within the band and improve the quality of their live sound, Harrison invited keyboardist Billy Preston to participate in the last nine days of sessions. New strains developed between the band members regarding the appointment of a financial adviser, the need for which had become evident without Epstein to manage business affairs. McCartney refused to sign the management contract with Klein, but he was out-voted by the other Beatles.
Martin stated that he was surprised when McCartney asked him to produce another album, as the Get Back sessions had been "a miserable experience" and he had "thought it was the end of the road for all of us". The completion and mixing of " I Want You She's So Heavy " on 20 August was the last occasion on which all Message To Australia - The Beatles - The Complete Roger Scott Tapes (CD) Beatles were together in the same studio.
They considered a different approach to songwriting by ending the Lennon—McCartney pretence and having four compositions apiece from Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, with two from Starr and a lead single around Christmas. Released on 26 September, Abbey Road sold four million copies within three months and topped the UK charts for a total of seventeen weeks.
Lennon, in Denmark at the time, did not participate. McCartney was unhappy with the producer's approach and particularly dissatisfied with the lavish orchestration on " The Long and Winding Road ", which involved a fourteen-voice choir and piece instrumental ensemble. McCartney filed suit for the dissolution of the Beatles' contractual partnership on 31 December Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others;  Starr's Ringo was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs.
Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, — and —were released inat first under the Apple Records imprint. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Banda musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Framptonwas a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham.
Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast.
The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. With Starr on drums and McCartney and his wife, Lindacontributing backing vocals, the song was released as a single in May Inthe Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fametheir first year of eligibility.

MacDonald comments, "while [he] worked more naturally with the conventionally articulate McCartney, the challenge of catering to Lennon's intuitive approach generally spurred him to his more original arrangements, of which ' Being for the Benefit of Mr.

Harrison echoed Martin's description of his stabilising role: "I think we just grew through those years together, him as the straight man and us as the loonies; but he was always there for us to interpret our madness — we used to be slightly avant-garde on certain days of the week, and he would be there as the anchor person, to communicate that through the engineers and on to the tape.
Making innovative use of technology while expanding the possibilities of recorded music, the Beatles urged experimentation by Martin and his recording engineers. Seeking ways to put chance occurrences to creative use, accidental guitar feedback, a resonating glass bottle, a tape loaded the wrong way round so that it played backwards — any of these might be incorporated into their music.
Along with innovative studio techniques such as sound effectsunconventional microphone placements, tape loops, double tracking and vari-speed recording, the Beatles augmented their songs with instruments that were unconventional in rock music at the time.
