 ·  · The road leading away from Home, the Chicks' acclaimed return to straight-ahead country, proved to be quite rocky for the Texan trio, largely due to anti-George W. Bush and anti-war comments lead singer Natalie Maines made during the long crawl to the Iraqi War. Maines' words, initially spoken off the cuff in concert but then repeated in numerous interviews, .

 · Stylistically, it recharged the band to aim less for country music tradition and more for the crossover pop success that always seemed within their grasp. The album's first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," defiantly addresses Maines' controversy and the title track is similarly fueled. However, Long Way is hardly an Op-Ed page set to music. Producer Rick Rubin, known for his judicious hand with country legend Johnny Cash, matches up the Chicks .

Nothing changes folks like babies and war, and since the release of their last album, 's Home, the Dixie Chicks have been forever altered by both. If that album showcased the trio as precocious young adults, Taking the Long Way finds them sobered and matured, and in a grown-up state of mind. Produced by the celebrated Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers), who saw the Chicks as "a great rock act making a country album, /5(K).

     · The album starts off extremely stongly with three outstanding tracks. "The Long Way Around" is simply so catchy that it must be the obvious choice for their next single. The album contains a handful of great ballads, and "Easy Silence" may very be the strongest - a very moving and personal song, which also could turn out to have hit-potentials/5(K).
