FIFA president Gianni Infantino says Fiji has the potential to be the hub for the sport in the region and FIFA is committed to assisting Fiji Football Association achieve it.

He arrived into the country yesterday to officiate at the launch of the state of the art fitness center and also opened the newly renovated Futsal pitch at the Fiji Football Association Academy in Vatuwaqa,Suva before being hosted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for lunch at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm Fijian welcome, the FIFA boss shared some good news for local football administrators.

Mr Infantino said FIFA is committed to the enhancement and development of the sport in the country therefore it continues to invest the development of a multi-million dollar high performance academy and 15,000 capacity stadium planned to be built in Lomolomo, Nadi.

He said the world football governing body is excited to work with the Fiji government and Fiji Football to take the sport to greater heights.

“Only as a team we can succeed, we can achieve results and that why we will invest in what needs to be invested,” he said.

He recommitted FIFA’s position in Fiji stating that it is here to stay and are willing to be part of the team. Mr Infantino said that FIFA was keen to work with Fiji Football and other stallholders to make Fiji the hub of football in the region.

He issued a stern warning to rugby administrators and fan that football could soon takeover as the number-one sport in the country with all the upcoming developments in the sport.

He said the upcoming developments of football in Fiji will benefit the young generation which will strengthen the future of the sport.

He said the future of football in Fiji looked bright and assured FIFA wpuld continue to assist in the growth of the sport.
