Take a look back through Friday’s Man United transfer news below

Ronaldo, De Jong and Ten Hag

Manchester United are just a few days away from the start of their Premier League campaign, though preparations haven’t gone quite as smoothly as Erik ten Hag would have hoped.

Superb victories over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace saw United kick off their pre-season with a bang, but some disappointing results since then coupled with transfer dramas have turned the atmosphere at Old Trafford a little sour.

The Frenkie de Jong pursuit shows no signs of nearing a conclusion despite now being into its fourth month. And to make matters worse, Chelsea are reportedly keen to bring the Dutchman to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, the Cristiano Ronaldo drama rumbles on. Ten Hag has reflected on Ronaldo’s decision to leave the friendly with Rayo Vallecano early, with the United boss admitting it was not acceptable.

Whether his words have an impact on the Portuguese star’s future plans remains to be seen.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: Do you think Ten Hag is handling the Ronaldo situation well? Have your say here.

Look back at the day’s Manchester United news below.

Demba Ba has revealed he almost joined Manchester United’s coaching staff during Ralf Rangnick’s difficult spell as interim manager.

Rangnick was brought in on a short-term basis last December, with a view to building a long-term strategy at Old Trafford but left prematurely after agreeing to become the manager of the Austrian national team in April.

Ba made the revelations about Rangnick’s approach in an interview on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in a new attacker before deadline day. Cristiano Ronaldo ’s future is uncertain amid his desire to leave the club, despite the United boss saying the Portuguese is still part of his plans.

Even so, the reports of Anthony Martial’s hamstring issue ahead of the Premier League opener with Brighton on Sunday has highlighted the club’s lack of depth up front. United have been mulling over a move for 19-year-old Sesko, who netted ten times last season.

Former Manchester United winger Nani wants to see countryman Cristiano Ronaldo stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.

Ronaldo trained on Wednesday after Erik ten Hag criticised him and other teammates for leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle in Sunday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Rayo Vallecano.

The attacker – who missed the club’s tour due to family reasons – still wishes to leave United. He is unlikely to start against Brighton in this Sunday’s Premier League opener due to lack of fitness, having played just 45 minutes in pre-season.

Donny van de Beek believes summer signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez will both be excellent additions to the Manchester United squad this season.

United have been active in the transfer window, with Eriksen and Martinez the two latest additions to Erik Ten Hag’s squad following the acquisition of left-back Tyrell Malacia earlier in the summer.

Ten Hag’s side agreed a three-year contract with midfielder Eriksen following his release from Brentford at the end of last season, while defender Martinez joined on a five-year deal from Ajax.

Gary Neville has given Chelsea a warning regarding their new ownership structure, suggesting that they could be at risk of repeating the mistakes that were made at Manchester United during Ed Woodward’s stint as CEO.

Following the departure of Roman Abramovich, Boehly led a consortium to begin a new era at Stamford Bridge and with seemingly deep pockets, hopes were high for a productive first window under his stewardship.

However, he is yet to appoint a senior figure to recruit players, instead choosing to conduct business himself in a similar fashion to Ed Woodward’s management of United.

Anthony Martial is reportedly a doubt for Sunday’s Premier League opener with Brighton due to a hamstring proble.

Sky Sports reports says the problem was suffered during the 1-0 friendly loss to Atletico Madrid on Saturday albeit the problem is only considered minor.

The Telegraph adds that Anthony Elanga is most likely to replace the attacker in the line-up with Cristiano Ronaldo not yet fit enough after just 45 minutes of pre-season action.

Erik ten Hag wants to make more signings this summer in order to complete his dream starting XI.

While the new manager has made a positive start to life at United, it’s clear that further reinforcements in key positions are still required if he has a hope of making the club competitive again in his first season.

Midfield is the position Ten Hag most wants to see improved, with a technical and composed holding-midfielder desired, while further additions in attack are also on his list.

A glimpse into the club’s latest training session at Carrington;

If there is one positive to take from pre-season progress under Erik ten Hag then that is ‘trust.’

United took somewhat of an educated risk with the appointment of Ten Hag back in April – given his sizeable success was limited to Dutch football – and his managerial accolades were often met with the caveat of the stage on which they were achieved.

Time will tell if Ten Hag really is a success at Old Trafford…

United and Chelsea will continue to pursue Denzel Dumfries – according to reports.

Dumfries, 26, moved from PSV Eindhoven to Inter Milan last summer, but could already be on his way out. Reports from Calciomercato suggest Inter have slapped a £34million price tag on the 35-cap international and that they might be forced to cash in on prized assets such as Dumfries owing to FFP rules.

Gazzetta dello Sport follows up those reports by claiming those clubs are interested.

United have agreed to send Alex Telles out on loan with Sevilla set to pay the majority of his wages.

United are looking into a possible deal for Benjamin Sesko and time is of the essence with other interest being shown in him.

No real surprise here.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer, and a move to London, where he would be playing Champions League football, is certainly more appealing.

The Metro reiterate this today with a report claiming De Jong would prefer to move to Chelsea over United.

Another day, another name.

United are looking to strengthen their attack and Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech is now being strongly linked with a move.

This would certainly make sense on a cut-price deal.

he midfielder.

The former striker is gearing up for his first managerial job in Australia as he takes charge of Macarthur FC. Back in May, he managed the A-League all-stars in a friendly against Barcelona, when United’s interest in De Jong was ramping up.

Yorke said he had spoken to the player at the game. Three months after negotiations first started, however De Jong looks no closer to an Old Trafford switch despite the clubs having agreed a deal in principle.
