A full recap of Man United’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United take on Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.

Manchester United brought their 2023 pre-season schedule to a close with a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

Winger Facundo Pellistri netted a last-gasp equaliser deep into stoppage time to rescue a draw for the Reds, who had been trailing since the 29th minute.

Bilbao had defender Aitor Paredes sent-off with 66 minutes on the clock and that invited United to apply plenty of pressure in the latter stages, a tactic that eventually paid off with the very last kick of the game.

The draw at the Aviva Stadium meant that United brought their pre-season campaign to an end with four wins, three defeats and one draw from their eight matches.

United will now switch their focus to their season opener against Wolves at Old Trafford in eight days time. It remains to be seen if the club will add any new faces to its squad before the season curtain-raiser.

‘Bring on United’ read the banner. It is unlikely many of their supporters will demand Erik ten Hag bring on Harry Maguire this season.

From Australia to the United States to Ireland, boos have followed Maguire across land and sea. He was initially applauded warmly at the Aviva Stadium but then turned attack into defence and Nico Williams pounced to put Athletic Bilbao ahead.

United brought their pre-season campaign to a close with a 1-1 draw against Bilbao in Dublin this afternoon.

Our chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst was inside the Aviva Stadium and here is a flavour of how he rated the players out of ten…

Tom Heaton

Acquitted himself well again as he willingly adapts to meet Erik ten Hag’s demands for proactive goalkeeping. Almost kept out Inaki Williams’s goal. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Did next to nothing in the final third again, which is what he is judged on. Opened conversation with Ten Hag; perhaps he is coming out of his shell. 5

FT – MUN 1-1 BILKEY EVENT

There goes the full-time whistle at the Aviva Stadium. United rescue a draw with the last kick of the game. Pellistri met Maguire’s cushioned header to draw them level.

Next up: the Premier League opener against Wolves.

93′ – MUN 1-1 BILKEY EVENT

Pellistri brings United level right at the death!

90′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

A total of two minutes have been added on at the Aviva Stadium.

87′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

United are hammering on the door for a leveller. Eriksen floats a terrific ball out to Evans at the back post. He nods it back into the mixer and Maguire looks destined to score, but a Bilbao defender somehow got to it first.

85′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

What a chance that was to draw level. Maguire is picked out at the back post, he volleys it back into the centre of the box and all it needs is a touch. It would have been a great assist had it found anyone in red.

84′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Evans goes into the book, earning himself a yellow card. He blocked Williams from getting to the ball and cannot complauin.

80′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

77′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

A total of 50,238 people are inside the Aviva Stadium this afternoon. Terrific support.

75′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Bilbao are ringing the changes, making three in total. Former United ace Herrera is among those coming on and he has earned a terrific reception from the crowd.

74′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Great play from Bilbao. Williams cuts the ball back for Munian and he fires a shot wide from inside the box. He should have hit the target.

73′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

That was a good chance. Wan-Bissaka picks out Hannibal, who takes the shot first time on the volley. He attempted to use the pace on the ball to find the net. It went just over.

70′ – MUN 0-1 BILRichard Fay

If there were two positions up for grabs then Wan-Bissaka and Sancho have certainly made compelling cases to take them. They have been two of the standout performers for United today, though the caveat is they are losing and the overall standard has been pretty low otherwise.

68′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

From the resulting free-kick following that red card, Eriksen has a go and the ball just goes over the top. Not far off.

67′ – MUN 0-1 BILKEY EVENT

Bilbao are reduced to ten men as Paredes is sent-off. He blocked Hannibal from breaking clear. Maybe a tad harsh given it’s a friendly.

That should liven things up, though.

64′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

ON: Hugill, Evans

OFF: Sancho, Fernandez

62′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Lekue goes into the book for Bilbao after dragging down Pellistri. It was the only way he was going to stop the winger. The resulting free-kick comes to nothing.

60′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

We have played 60 minutes at the Aviva Stadium and United still trail 1-0.

Ten Hag probably would have liked to have seen a little more attacking intent at the start of this second half.

55′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Bilbao attempt to work a nice free-kick routine. Munian’s free-kick from out wide is rolled to the edge of the box for Galarreta to hit it, but it flies over the top. It was never going to trouble Heaton in the United goal. It would have been perfect had the rugby posts still been up.

51′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

More good play from United. Sancho floats a cross towards the pack post and picks out Pellistri, who heads wide. He thought it took a deflection and was worthy of a corner. The referee disagreed.

48′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

Bright start to the second half by United. Pellistri picks out Sancho, who finds Eriksen. He then looks set to shoot but loses possession. It finds a way to Gore at the edge of the box and his low drive is easily dealt with by Simon.

46′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

The second half is under way at the Aviva Stadium. United have made one change at half-time, bringing Hannibal on in place of Van de Beek.

HT – MUN 0-1 BILSamuel Luckhurst

Here are your half-time player ratings from the Aviva Stadium…

Heaton

Acquitted himself well again and almost kept out Williams’s shot. 6

Wan-Bissaka

Still not doing enough in the final third. 6

Maguire

Error led to the goal. 4

Lindelof

Comfortable on the left. 6

Fernandez

Some good charges but almost gave away a penalty. 6

Gore

Involved. 6

Eriksen

Could be more commanding. 6

Pellistri

Started brightly but faded. 6

Van de Beek

Underwhelming. 5

Forson

Not as threatening as against Dortmund. 5

Sancho

Some decent moments but missed a good chance. 6

HT – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

There goes the half-time whistle here at the Aviva Stadium. United trail 1-0 at the break following Williams’ opener.

41′ – MUN 0-1 BILRichard Fay

A year ago, Eriksen was the shining star on the weekend before the new season, now he is very much part of the furniture. He is still classy and creative with the ball at his feet, but it is obvious he can’t be relied upon every week. A big challenge for Ten Hag this season will be how he handles playing time.

38′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

The heavens have opened in Dublin. The rain is falling quite impressively. Those sat in the front rows are getting out of their seats and running for cover. It might be an excuse to beat the half-time queues and grab a pie or a cuppa.

33′ – MUN 0-1 BILGeorge Smith

United have responded well to going behind and have had a flurry of corners in quick succession. Pellistri is creating most of the problems.
