Erik ten Hag is searching for an attacking reinforcement ahead of the transfer window shutting in four days’ time, but he may have to deal with a potential exit of a current striker.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford remains unclear. The forward handed in a transfer request earlier in the summer although Ten Hag has reiterated the Portugal hero remains part of his plans, insisting the player has not told him he wants to leave.

Nevertheless, it will be the main topic of conversation for the remainder of the window. Secondary to that will be United’s chase of Antony.

After reports that another bid from the Reds was rejected, the Ajax star hit out at his club for not allowing him to leave. He is pushing for an exit and is not currently training with the first team.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: Will Ronaldo leave Man Utd before deadline day? Have your say here.

We will have more on Antony tomorrow across the MEN.

This is how much it means to play for the Reds

Players in

Tyrell Malacia

Manchester United’s first signing of the summer, left-back Tyrell Malacia joined from Feyenoord and looks to have made an immediate impact at the club, already seemingly taking the starting spot from Luke Shaw.

Malacia performed strongly in his full debut against Liverpool after his £13 million move and has already been compared to Patrice Evra by Rio Ferdinand.

Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso is confident that the La Liga club will sign former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani this summer.

The Uruguayan attacker, who is a free agent after leaving United at the end of last season, has been linked with a move to Spain for several weeks, with Real Sociedad also interested in the 35-year-old after losing Alexander Isak to Newcastle United.

Speaking ahead of Valencia’s fixture against Atletico Madrid on Monday, Gattuso said: “I am optimistic by nature, we are working, speaking, I think that we have chances.

There were just 10 minutes remaining when Casemiro was summoned for his Manchester United debut and it felt like perfect timing to introduce the Brazilian master of the defensive midfield role.

It had been an even game until United took the lead, but since then Southampton had turned up the pressure and Erik ten Hag’s team were clinging on a little.

Casemiro is almost perfect for these situations and his first contribution was to win a calm header and keep possession in central midfield. A couple of minutes later the 30-year-old dropped back at a goal kick to tell Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to move up the field and instruct David de Gea to go long.

It is not being ruled out

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl believes his side should have been awarded a penalty in their defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

United picked up back-to-back wins for the first time under Erik ten Hag as Bruno Fernandes struck the only goal of the game at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The Portuguese’s composed finish proved to be the decisive moment in a close-fought match in which both sides largely cancelled each other out.

He is edging closer to a move to Old Trafford

Former striker Michael Owen believes Casemiro’s addition to the squad could further impact Manchester United captain Harry Maguire’s prospects of winning his place back in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Maguire, who found himself under constant scrutiny last season, was left out of the starting line-up for the second game in succession on Saturday, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez once again preferred at centre-back for the 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s. The duo started alongside each other against Liverpool too, with Varane preferred to Maguire, and formed a promising-looking partnership.

They each played their part on the South Coast, helping United register their first away win of the season and a first clean sheet on the road since December last year, leaving Maguire with an uphill struggle to win his place back.

Marcus Rashford has sent a clear message after the victory at Southampton

Scott McTominay has lauded Manchester United’s signings of midfielder Casemiro and defender Lisandro Martinez this summer.

Casemiro was officially unveiled earlier this week after completing his £60m switch from Real Madrid and he is Erik ten Hag’s fourth signing at the club. Casemiro was named on the bench against Southampton but he played the final 10 minutes in the match.

The signing of Casemiro, 30, has been widely praised, with the defensive midfielder bringing a wealth of experience to Old Trafford. Casemiro is a world-class defensive midfielder and he has won five Champions League titles in his illustrious career.

McTominay, speaking after United beat Southampton 1-0 on Saturday, was asked about the Reds’ new signings and he lavished the praise on Casemiro and Martinez, who started alongside Raphael Varane at centre-back at St. Mary’s stadium.

PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo has confirmed interest from Manchester United.

While United are focused on completing a deal to bring Ajax forward Antony to Old Trafford this summer, Erik ten Hag is also thought to be keen on a move for Gakpo.

The 23-year-old, who bagged 12 goals and registered 12 assists in the Eredivisie last term, has already netted three goals and clocked up the same amount of assists from just three league matches this campaign.

Speaking to ESPN after his side’s 6-1 win over Excelsior on Sunday, he confirmed there was interest in him from United.

“There are also other options, United are a serious option,” he said.

“I can hear it all. I try to shut myself off from it, but it’s difficult.”

Paul Scholes thinks Casemiro could free up Scott McTominay and Fred to be more effective going forward, just as Roy Keane did for him at Manchester United.

Brazilian Casemiro came on as a second-half substitute for his debut in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southampton. The 30-year-old, who has joined on a four-year deal, is seen as the solution for the defensive midfield void in Erik ten Hag’s team.

Alongside Fred, McTominay has been asked to operate in that role in recent times but has struggled to make the impact many United fans longed for. He appears likely to be the man who makes way for Casemiro in the starting line-up long-term, despite impressing on the South Coast on Saturday.

Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso is confident that the LaLiga club will sign former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani this summer.

The Uruguayan attacker, who is a free agent after leaving United at the end of last season, has been linked with a move to Spain for several weeks, with Real Sociedad also interested in the 35-year-old.

Speaking ahead of Valencia’s fixture against Atletico Madrid on Monday, Gattuso said: “I am optimistic by nature, we are working, speaking, I think that we have chances.

“Peter Lim is working a lot and I think that we are going to sign Cavani because Lim has a lot of belief in those chances at the moment.”

Manchester United have reportedly enquired about PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi.

According to journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, United have made ‘tentative enquiries’ for Hakimi. However, he adds that their chances of landing the 22-year-old are slim.

“Hakimi is unlikely,” he told GiveMeSport. “There have been tentative enquiries again on that one, because he was linked with Barcelona and United have looked at Hakimi before.

“If he’s going to be available, they want to be in that conversation.”

Ruben Neves has revealed that he planned to leave Wolves at the end of last season amid reported interest from Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The midfielder, who has two years remaining on his contract at Wolves, admitted he believed he would depart the club this summer.

“Well, let’s see what happens,” Neves told The Times when asked if being given the captaincy is a sign of commitment to Wolves.

“If you ask me at the end of last season I would have said to you: ‘I will leave’, but I’m still here, so we never know what’s going to happen.”

Frenkie de Jong is expected to remain at Barcelona this summer, and Manchester United have reportedly ‘all but given up’ on the Dutchman.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea have also made no further progress in their pursuit of the midfielder, and Liverpool are looking elsewhere.

Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder appeared to accuse Antony of being money-motivated as Manchester United close in on a deal to sign the Brazilian.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United are edging closer to completing the signing of the 22-year-old. The club saw a fresh bid for Antony knocked back on Friday but are confident of completing a deal that could cost close to €100million (£84.66m).

Antony was left out of the Ajax squad that beat FC Utrecht 2-0 on Sunday. He also missed last weekend’s clash with Sparta Rotterdam after failing to train on Friday and Saturday in the build-up to the match, with several reports suggesting that he had chosen to go on ‘strike’.

Following Ajax’s 2-0 win over FC Utrecht this afternoon, head coach Alfred Schreuder appears to have hit out at Antony and his impending move to Manchester United.

The Ajax chief told ESPN:

Manchester United are edging closer to signing Antony from Ajax.

The 22-year-old was omitted from the Ajax squad for the second successive game at FC Utrecht and it is understood United are progressing on a deal for the forward.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last week United were due to bid again for Antony and were confident of signing the Brazil international.

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes the Reds could have benefitted from Cristiano Ronaldo’s predatory instincts during the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s.

Ronaldo, just as he did against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday evening, started on the bench, with Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho preferred in attack. The aforementioned trio linked up well against the Merseysiders and deserved to keep their places, although Anthony Martial would have been knocking on the door had he been available.

Ten Hag favours a fluid front-three based upon pace and trickery, meaning Sancho and Rashford, in particular, are likely to be regular starters under him. Deploying those two, plus Elanga, however, means that United lack an out-and-out goalscorer at the top end of the pitch.

Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder insists there have not been any developments in relation to Manchester United’s ongoing pursuit of winger Antony.

The 22-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for the second weekend running on Sunday, not being included in the starting line-up or on the bench for the clash with FC Utrecht. He played no part in last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam after reportedly going on ‘strike’ and refusing to train on Friday and Saturday.

It is quite unique just how quickly the mood around a football club can change after a couple of wins.

But after producing an outstanding performance to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford on Monday, Manchester United showed a different side to themselves to get the better of Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. Bruno Fernandes produced a moment of quality to seal a 1-0 win for the Reds, netting a terrific volley just ten minutes into the start of the second-half.

The Portuguese connected with compatriot Diogo Dalot’s cross and made no mistake to guide a crisp finish past Gavin Bazunu to claim his first goal of the season. It was a moment of class that the contest desperately needed, as United were forced to dig deep.

Erik ten Hag believes Bruno Fernandes has been inspired by the Manchester United captaincy this week after his fine goal earned all three points at Southampton.

The Portuguese midfielder capped a fine team goal with a superb finish to give United back-to-back wins for the first time since February and only the third time this calendar year.

Fernandes was an impressive performer when he wore the armband in the win against Liverpool on Monday and while he was inconsistent at St Mary’s, he produced one of the few moments of real quality in the game.

According to a report by Il Mattino, Manchester United are ready to ‘include Cristiano Ronaldo’ in a deal that they hope will bring Napoli striker Victor Osimhen to Old Trafford.

It is claimed that the Reds are preparing an ‘audacious’ cash-plus-player offer for the Nigerian international, with them prepared to offer Ronaldo in the exchange deal.

Furthermore, it is suggested that Jorge Mendes – Ronaldo’s agent – has alerted Napoli that an offer totalling €140million (£118m) will be presented to them.

Antony has been left out of Ajax’s matchday squad for the second weekend running amid Manchester United’s ongoing pursuit of the Brazilian.

Antony, who joined the Dutch heavyweights from Sao Paulo back in 2020, has not been named in either the starting line-up or on the substitutes bench for Ajax’s tussle with FC Utrecht. It is the second Eredivise fixture in a row that he has not been involved in, as he also played no part in last Sunday’s 1-0 triumph over Sparta Rotterdam.

Antony, who scored 12 goals in all competitions last season, is desperate to seal a move to Old Trafford ahead of Thursday evening’s transfer deadline and has made no secret of his intentions. He has not been training with the squad and has been pleading with Ajax to negotiate a deal with United.
