Manchester United recorded their first victory of the season on Monday evening, beating arch-rivals Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Goals either side of the half-time interval from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford fired United into a two-goal lead before Mohamed Salah reduced the deficit late on with a close-range header. United were full value for the victory, producing their best performance in several months to secure their first win of the Erik ten Hag era.

It capped off a successful evening for the club, as the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro was confirmed just ahead of kick-off, meaning the Brazilian was presented to the Old Trafford faithful. He has become the club’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, following the earlier arrivals of Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

United, however, are still on the hunt for more arrivals ahead of the transfer window closing in just over a week’s time. Ten Hag remains keen to strengthen his attacking options and reports connecting Ajax ace Antony with a move to M16 continue to gather significant pace.

The Reds have been on the hunt for a new right-sided winger for much of the summer and links with the Ajax star have resurfaced over the past week or so.

Today’s big talking point: do you think Antony will sign for United? Click here to have your say.

Could the former United man make his return to Old Trafford?

Manchester United transfer target Antony has sent a message to former Ajax teammate Lisandro Martinez.

Antony did not feature for Ajax at the weekend against Sparta Rotterdam. Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder confirmed that Antony had told him he was ‘not 100 per cent’ ready to play for his side.

Schreuder added that he was confident the Brazilian would remain at the club as long as they are playing in the Champions League. However, the saga took another turn on Monday night when the 22-year-old and his agent, Emerson Santos, were pictured on the latter’s Instagram watching the United game. The post would subsequently be removed from the social media platform.

Rio Ferdinand was taken aback upon learning what Graeme Souness recently said about Manchester United new boy Casemiro, after the Scot claimed the Brazilian had “never been a great player.”

Casemiro was presented to the Old Trafford crowd ahead of Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday after signing a four-year deal. He is Erik ten Hag’s fourth signing of the summer and the defensive midfielder the club have been crying out for.

However, despite his five Champions League and three La Liga successes, Souness doesn’t believe Casemiro is the world-class talent United need. Souness said : “You’re getting a ‘steady Eddie’.

Manchester United’s players were back in training on Tuesday following their first victory of the season over Liverpool on Monday.

The difference between the Reds’ performance at Brentford and the one they produced against Jurgen Klopp’s side was like night and day. Jadon Sancho gave United the lead with a cool finish before Marcus Rashford doubled the advantage after half-time.

Mohamed Salah scored a late goal for Liverpool but it wasn’t enough to stop United from picking up their first victory of the campaign. The victory saw Erik ten Hag’s side leapfrog Liverpool and set them up nicely for Saturday’s clash with Southampton.

Raphael Varane says Manchester United have signed a “warrior” in his former Real Madrid teammate Casemiro.

Casemiro completed his £70million transfer to United on Monday night and was unveiled in front of the Old Trafford crowd prior to their uplifting win over Liverpool.

Varane was teammates with Casemiro for eight years at Madrid, where they won four Champions Leagues together before Casemiro collected a fifth against Liverpool in May.

Fair to say Manchester United fans made him feel at home

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has revealed the details of the conversation he had with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Reds’ 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Ronaldo, who started United’s first win of the season on the bench, came across to speak to Neville and fellow former United teammate Roy Keane ahead of kick-off. Neville and Keane were part of Sky Sports’ punditry team for the televised fixture and were conducting their pre-match analysis pitchside.

Having noticed the duo, Ronaldo, who was still going through his pre-match warm-up, jogged across to the side of the pitch and had a very brief conversation with the pair. The 37-year-old’s conversation with Keane was captured on Sky’s microphones, but Neville’s chat with the striker was out of reach.

The former Ajax man certainly enjoyed that one

Raphael Varane says Unired have signed a ‘warrior’ in former Real Madrid teammate Casemiro.

Reports from 90min suggest United still want to sign priority target Frenkie de Jong before the 11pm deadline next Thursday night – even after completing their move for Casemiro – as discussions with the Barcelona star continue into a fourth month. For now, though, De Jong remains at the Nou Camp.

PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has once again been pressed on Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo, 23, is on the radar for United this summer as they target further new additions.

But what did the former United player have to say about his prospect?

United supporters are still dreaming about Frenkie de Jong moving to Old Trafford after the Barcelona midfielder ‘liked’ a video showing Casemiro arriving at the stadium on Monday night before a statement win over Liverpool.

Fans were delighted to see the unveiling of Casemiro ahead of the game, with some greeting him as he made his way into Old Trafford only hours after waving goodbye to Real Madrid in his press conference.

Casemiro is the latest signing through the door after his switch from Real Madrid was confirmed on Monday night. But what do you think about this summer transfer window?

How much of an impact will Casemiro signing have on Frenkie de Jong?

Here is the current state of play according to odds from bookmakers SkyBet.

To stay at Barca – 10/11

Manchester United – 8/5

Bayern Munich – 3/1

Chelsea – 5/1

Manchester City – 40/1

United have agreed personal terms with PSV starlet Cody Gakpo – according to reports.

Speculation over Gakpo and his future with the Eredivisie club continues to mount in the days leading up to the window closing. United and fellow Premier League sides have until Thursday, September 1 at 11pm to finalise their business.

Reports in The Sun claim United have seen an initial £34million offer turned down for the Netherlands international as they continue to pursue his signature. However – despite that set-back – the same article states personal terms have now been agreed with the attacking prospect.

The weather was ominous on Monday afternoon in Trafford, Manchester. The rain was torrential and dark clouds had gathered above, which seemed a metaphor for the bleak mood around Manchester United ahead of their game against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The 1958 supporters’ group had urged fans to protest against the Glazers before the match and the message was sent to arrive at The Tollgate pub just over two hours before kick-off. “Be loud, be proud, stand as one,” a statement from the group read and thousands of fans responded to that rallying call. The Tollgate only allowed supporters with a match ticket in the pub but others gathered outside.

The rain had stopped and there were loud renditions of ‘he goes by the name of Wayne Rooney’ and ‘I see the Stretford End arising’ in the beer garden, but quickly anti-Glazer chants broke out with a degree of venom. “We want the Glazers out,” the fans in the pub garden sang before the first airing of the sinister Joel Glazer chant was heard. That was followed by thick green and gold smoke.

Rio Ferdinand has tipped Lisandro Martinez to be a big signing for Manchester United after he and Tyrell Malacia shone during the statement win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night.

After slipping to back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Brentford in their first two fixtures, United are up and running under Erik ten Hag. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford did the damage before Mohamed Salah responded in a 2-1 win which leaves the Reds winless after three games.

Martinez was hooked at half-time during the Brentford demolition. However, after remaining in the line-up on Monday night, the summer signing was a stand-out for United alongside Malacia and other players.

The same supporter who had enquired as to whether the Marko Arnautovic bid could actually be true 15 days earlier this time yelled my name and roared “Yesssssssss”, clenching his fist as he floated down the gangway.

Full-time at Old Trafford. ‘Glory glory Man United’ blared from the speakers. The scoreboard read Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool. Liverpool have cringingly copyrighted ‘this means more’. It still means more for United supporters to beat their arch nemesis.

Stewards shuffled along the sparse rows and lawnmowers buzzed as Sky Sports conducted its pitchside analysis. On the walk to the mixed zone designated in the Stretford End, a steward – appropriately called Fergie – quipped Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw cannot start again. Not if United play that way.

Manchester United remain in contact with the representatives of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and are still ‘hopeful’ of bringing him to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

That is according to a report by 90Min, who claim that the Dutchman remains an active target for the Reds, despite Casemiro being added to Erik ten Hag’s squad.

De Jong remains Ten Hag’s top target in his quest to rebuild United’s midfield.

Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho has revealed Erik ten Hag worked on ‘transitions’ after the defeat against Brentford.

United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Monday night thanks to goals from Sancho and Marcus Rashford. It was the perfect response from Ten Hag’s side after suffering two humiliating defeats against Brighton and Brentford. United started the game with intent and Liverpool failed to cope with their energy in all areas across the pitch, which eventually led to Sancho opening the scoring.

Sancho’s brilliantly composed finish shocked Liverpool after just 15 minutes and Rashford extended the Reds’ advantage after half-time. It was an outstanding strike from Rashford, who did well to score following a well-worked counter-attack.

Fernandes was asked about the signing of Casemiro last night.

Sources close to Ajax expect United to make another bid for Antony, according to The Athletic.

Antony watched United beat Liverpool 2-1 on television with his agent last night and the article claims the Reds’ improved offer for the player could be worth around €94million (£79.4m).

Cody Gakpo is another target at Old Trafford.

Roy Keane warned Casemiro that he will be stepping into a disjointed dressing room at Manchester United prior to the win over Liverpool.

Confidence among the players will have risen significantly following Monday night’s win, with United claiming their first points of the season and leapfrogging Liverpool in the table in the process.

The Reds travel to St Mary’s to take on Southampton this Saturday, when Casemiro could make his debut. The defensive midfielder, who has cost around £60m, was at Old Trafford to witness the victory over Liverpool.

Christian Eriksen has admitted Manchester United could have kept the ball more efficiently against Liverpool.

United bounced back from embarrassing defeats against Brighton and Brentford in the Premier League with an outstanding performance to beat Liverpool 2-1 on Monday night, with well-taken goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

It was a monumental result for Erik ten Hag, who was given a baptism of fire in the Premier League after starting the new season with two humiliating defeats.

Erik ten Hag has already warned how Manchester United could face a difficult challenge in their efforts to lure Ajax star Antony to Old Trafford ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

United, who have already drafted in one Ajax player this summer after landing Lisandro Martinez, are desperate to add to their attacking options ahead of the transfer window closing in just over a week’s time.

Bringing in a new right-sided winger has been a leading priority for them throughout the summer and they remain determined to source one.

It was always going to be a massive risk, but it was a risk that paid off. Manchester United’s best performance of the season came thanks to gambles all across the pitch, with Erik ten Hag not afraid to drop anyone for the match against Liverpool, regardless of their reputation or stature.

Under former managers, United would have gone for the risk-adverse Fred and Scott McTominay axis in midfield, one that has been tried and tested in recent years.

There would have been no problem if they had done that on Monday night either. Sure, ‘McFred’ isn’t a long-term fix, but as much as they are restrictive in what they give, they also give a pretty reliable output of movement and mobility.

Erik ten Hag hailed the potential of Tyrell Malacia after the left-back excelled on his full Manchester United debut in the victory over Liverpool.

Malacia, 22, played the full 90 minutes of United’s uplifting 2-0 victory, having been preferred over Luke Shaw in what was one of four changes to the team that was humbled 4-0 at Brentford.

United bought Netherlands international Malacia from Feyenoord for a fee rising to £14.6million after he caught Ten Hag’s eye when he was Ajax manager.
