Six months ahead of the 2024 election vote, political parties’ efforts to approach young voters are becoming more massive. The young generation is the target because based on the Permanent Voter List (DPT) determined by the General Election Commission (KPU) in early July, 52 percent of the 204 million voters are young or under 40 years old.

One political party that is aggressively approaching young people is the Democratic Party. On Saturday (5/8/2023), Democrats held a Chat with Young People event in the city of Bandung, West Java. In the event which lasted for approximately one hour, Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono invited the presidential candidate (candidate) from the Change Coalition for Unity Anies Rasyid Baswedan.

In front of hundreds of young people in Kota Kembang, Agus and Anies shared their ideas related to this country, especially in preparing the young generation to welcome Indonesia Emas 2045. Both Anies and Agus complemented each other’s ideas relatively well. They also criticized current authorities who are considered to hinder freedom of expression and accumulate debt problems.

Presidential candidate from the Coalition for Unity and Change (KPP), Anies Rasyid Baswedan, had a discussion with the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, in front of young generations in Bandung, West Java, on Saturday (5/8/2023). These two political figures met and discussed ideas related to the youth in this country.

They also supported each other in arguing and answering questions from a group of youth. The topics ranged from having courage in making choices, law enforcement, to self-reliance in facing the future.

Not only that, several times Agus introduced Anies as a presidential candidate supported by the Democratic Party. “Democrats want to specifically greet the people of West Java, especially Bandung, by presenting a candidate for presidential change, Mas Anies Baswedan. We have dialogue, greet directly and listen to the aspirations of Bandung’s youth,” said Agus.

The Democratic Party has indeed committed to supporting Anies as a presidential candidate along with the Nasdem Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). The three political parties are members of the Coalition for Change for Unity (KPP).

Young people are being targeted by political parties because the younger generation, especially millennials and Gen Z, will become the dominant voters in the 2024 elections.

The young election supervisors were trained to deliver messages with polite and cultured language. Moreover, they were also prepared to target young voters who make up 52 percent of the voter list.

Separately, a researcher at the Political Research Center for the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Wasisto Raharjo Jati, said that the phenomena of political parties attracting young people, including as part of a campaign team, is a symbolic effort to rally support.
