Transfer insider Florian Plettenberg reports West Ham and Ajax want to find an agreement ‘soon’ for Edson Alvarez, after the Hammers opened the bidding with a £30million offer.

The Hammers sold Declan Rice in mid-July and have as yet not looked close to signing a replacement. Having lost one of the Premier League’s best midfielders – and been generously remunerated with £105million – you’d expect any side to get to work on doing so quite quickly.

West Ham have not found signing players an easy task this summer, though. So much so that the relationship between David Moyes and those around him is reportedly straining, and his job could be in danger.

However, the transfer for Rice’s replacement might be around the corner. They’ve already agreed upon personal terms with Ajax midfielder Alvarez, and insider Plettenberg suggests there may soon be a breakthrough in talks between the two clubs.

He states West Ham have lodged their ‘first official offer’ of £30million for Alvarez. Plettenberg adds that both clubs ‘want to find an agreement soon’.

And while it’s expected that the final fee will rise to £35million, the two sides are in ‘very good and respectful talks’. Plettenberg also adds that Alvarez will sign for the Hammers until 2028 if the clubs do come to an agreement, which it sounds as if they will.

Signing a replacement for Rice in general will be a boost for Moyes’ side. It may ease the tensions at the club, and crucially, it would be the first signing made with the money from Rice – and the first signing at all this window.

It would also be a bonus due to how good of a player Alvarez is. The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with him in the past.

He ranks very highly in passing stats, as well as clearances, aerial duels and touches as a whole, according to data from FBREF.

As such, there might not be many better players for West Ham to replace Rice with, and he’ll be a steal in that price bracket. They will hope he has a similar impact to what Rice had.

While they might feel the effects of only signing one player this summer, at least if that player has enough of an impact, it won’t be a huge concern.
